Some considerations on the Boltzmann equation
L. Boltzmann, starting from a mechanical particle system, derived in 1872 his famous equation, to give a reduced efficient description of the behaviour of a rarefied gas. Although this equation is largely used in Physics, a full mathematical justification of its validity is still missing. We discuss the very few results in this direction and the very many open problems.

A survey on fully nonlinear parabolic problems and viscosity solutions
The main purpose of this talk is giving an overview on the notion of viscosity solutions and fully nonlinear operators. We will see the background in which viscosity solutions have born and some of their properties. We will also discuss some of the most common techniques related to the viscosity setting, such as the Perron method. We will then focus on the fully nonlinear parabolic setting with superlinear lower order terms of first order. Beyond discussing existence and regularity results, we will also compare the difficulties of having powers of the gradient as source terms in the viscosity and in the weak framework. We will finally analyze the behavior of the fully nonlinear parabolic problem in object for large time. To this aim, we will introduce the related stationary and the ergodic problems.

Density related with groups of rational numbers
I will talk about extending the partial results that already appeared in the literate regarding the densities of particular sets of primes to general setup. The ultimate goal of the presentation is to characterise subgroups of the rationals for which the above densities vanish under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis.

Multi-agent optimal control and mean field limits with density constraints
The talk will be devoted to the analysis of a variational problem that describes the optimal evolution of a probability measure, subject to density constraints and nonlocal potential of Riesz type. The problem arises in the study of some first order Mean Field type control problems, with density constraints and aggregating interactions. Under suitable symmetry assumptions, I will discuss the existence of periodic orbits, and their convergence to heteroclinics, which connect different ground states of the stationary problem in an infinite time horizon. Finally, I will discuss some qualitative properties of the discrete counterpart of the problem, which involves the optimal evolution of a finite number of particles that are subject to distance constraints.

Models from mixture theory for biofilm growth
In this talk, we present the construction of PDE model describing the evolution of microalgae or bacteria interacting together and in interaction with their environment. These models are based on the mixture theory and are coupled with reaction-diffusion equations or fluid mechanics equations. We begin with the description of micro-algae biofilms in fountains, then the description of biofilms of micro-algae producing lipids according to the available nutrients and finally, the evolution in time of gut microbiota in interaction with the colon rheology.

Lang-Vojta conjecture over function fields for surfaces dominating tori
The celebrated Lang-Vojta Conjecture predicts degeneracy of integral (or more in general S-integral) points on varieties of log general type defined over number fields. It admits a geometric analogue over function fields, where stronger results have been obtained applying a method developed by Corvaja and Zannier. In this talk, we present a recent result for non-isotrivial surfaces over function fields dominating a two-dimensional torus. This extends Corvaja and Zannier result in the isotrivial case and it is based on an estimate about greatest common divisors of polynomials evaluated at S-units. This is a joint work with A. Turchet.

Differential attacks using alternative operations
Block ciphers and their security are the main subjects of this seminar, where it is described the impact of differential cryptanalysis, a powerful statistical attack against block ciphers, when operations different from the one used to perform the key addition are considered on the message space. It is proven that when an alternative difference operation is carefully designed, a cipher that is proved secure against classical differential cryptanalysis can instead be attacked using this alternative difference.

On the stability of the Gauss mean value formula
The mean integral of harmonic functions on a ball is equal to the value of the functions at the center of the ball. This is the well known Gauss mean value formula for harmonic functions. The question of its stability can be raised: if the mean integral of harmonic functions on a set D is almost equal to the value of these functions at x in D, then D is almost a ball with center x? In this talk I will discuss recent results on this issue obtained in collaboration with N. Fusco, E. Lanconelli and X. Zhong.

Mathematical modeling and numerical investigation of traveling waves in biomedicine and geophysics
The thesis is organized as follows: after a brief summary concerning the main mathematical topics and tools, the core of the work essentially consists of introducing and analyzing two biomedical contexts related to cancer research. The first one involves the Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition and its reverse process, the Mesenchymal-to-Epithelial Transition, which are crucial steps at the base of morphogenesis and, consequently, critical phenomena in terms of malignant features acquiring or losing for cancerous cells; the second one takes into account the so-called Warburg effect and frames a biomedical stage in which the carcinogenesis has already occurred, thus focusing on tumor cells spreading within a healthy tissue. The dissertation is provided with a final section devoted to a further mathematical modeling theme, which goes beyond the purely biomedical framework: indeed, on the heels of the thematic aaffinity concerning some mathematical topics to be relied on in the following, such as traveling waves, the geophysical eld will be referred to in order to perform simulations about the earthquakes occurrences. The aim of this geophysical analysis also consists in exhibiting a further and effective proof about the versatility applied mathematics is characterized by, specifically in such a socially relevant field.

Collective cell migration in biology and medicine
Collective cell migration is a commonly recurring theme in biology and medicine, with examples in developmental biology, wound healing, and disease. For example, in solid tumours, new blood vessels are created by the process of angiogenesis and these then supply the tumour with nutrients and also a way to metastasize. In developmental biology, neural crest cells migrate long distances to form structures, such as the lining of the gut, cranial features etc. I will survey a number of mathematical models that have been proposed for these phenomena and describe how they have been used to generate new biological insights.

Almost Gorenstein rings and further generalizations: the 1-dimensional case
I will present the class of almost Gorenstein rings, with focus onto 1-dimensional (commutative, unital) local rings. This class of rings, introduced (by Barucci and Froberg) for algebroid curves, and recently extended (by Goto and others) to more general 1-dimensional rings, and late on in dimension greater than 1, has been intensively studied in the last years. In the 1-dimensional case definitions of other classes of rings have later been suggested that generalize Gorenstein rings and almost Gorenstein rings from different point of view: in particular, I will discuss one of them, which is motivated by the relations between the properties of the ring (R,m) and those of the R-algebra m:m in Q(R). This is (partially) a joint work with Francesco Strazzanti.

Stability conditions on Gushel-Mukai varieties
A generic Gushel-Mukai variety X is a quadric section of a linear section of the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). Kuznetsov and Perry proved that the bounded derived category of X has a semiorthogonal decomposition with exceptional objects and a non-trivial subcategory Ku(X), known as the Kuznetsov component. In this talk we will discuss the construction of stability conditions on Ku(X) and, consequently, on the bounded derived category of X. As applications, for X of even-dimension, we will construct locally complete families of hyperkaehler manifolds from moduli spaces of stable objects in Ku(X) and we will determine when X has a homological associated K3 surface. This is a joint work with Alex Perry and Xiaolei Zhao.
