Spectral stability of inviscid columnar vortices
Columnar vortices are stationary solutions of the three-dimensional
Euler equations with axial symmetry, where the fluid particles spin
around the vertical axis while moving in horizontal planes. Stability
of such flows was first investigated by Rayleigh and by Kelvin in
1880, but until today the only analytical results that can be found in
the literature are necessary conditions for instability under either
planar or axisymmetric perturbations. The goal of this talk is to show
that columnar vortices are spectrally stable for a large class of
velocity profiles, including the most commonly used models in
atmospheric flows and engineering applications. This a joint work with
Didier Smets (Paris).

Supernova neutrino observations: Challenges and Opportunities
The detection of neutrinos from the next galactic supernova (SN)
represents one of the next frontiers of low-energy neutrino astronomy.
In this talk, I will review some of the lessons from such an
observation where neutrinos largely play the role of astrophysical
messengers, allowing to probe the SN explosion mechanism and to
constrain the emission of exotic particles. I will put a particular
emphasis on the flavor conversions of SN neutrinos. I will present
recent results on self-induced effects, associated with
neutrino-neutrino interactions in the deepest supernova regions. I
will show how these nonlinear effects can lead 'fast' flavor
conversions near the SN core that would have a strong impact on the SN
dynamics and on the observable neutrino fluxes.

Rational Matrix Differential Operators and Integrable systems of PDEs
A key feature of integrability for systems of evolution PDEs ut=F(u),
u=(u1,...,uk) is to be part of an infinite hierarchy of commuting
generalized symmetries. In all known examples, these generalized symmetries are constructed
by means of Lenard-Magri sequences involving a pair of matrix differential operators (A,B).
We show that in the scalar case k=1 a necessary condition for a pair of differential
operators (A,B) to generate a Lenard-Magri sequence is that the ratio L=AB-1
lies in a class of operators which we call integrable and contains all ratios of compatible
Poisson (or Hamiltonian) structures. We give a sufficient condition on an integrable pair
of matrix differential operators (A,B) to generate an infinite Lenard-Magri sequence when
the rational matrix differential operator L=AB-1 is weakly non-local.
If time permits, we will generalize these results to differential-difference equations.

Poincaré inequalities for Sobolev spaces with matrix valued weights and
applications
For bounded domains of Rn, we prove that the Lp-norm of a regular function with
compact support is controlled by weighted Lp-norms of its gradient, where the weight belongs
to a class of symmetric non-negative definite matrix valued functions. The class of weights is defined
by regularity assumptions and structural conditions on the degeneracy set S, where the determinant
vanishes. In particular, S is assumed to be a sufficiently regular compact submanifold of Rn
(with or without boundary) and the matrix weight A is assumed to have rank at least one when restricted
to the normal bundle of the degeneracy set S. As an auxiliary result of independendent interest, we also
prove a regularity result for the distance function from a compact submanifold with boundary in Rn.
This generalization of the classical Poincaré inequality can be applied to develop a robust theory
of first order Lp-based Sobolev spaces with matrix valued weight A. The Poincar´ inequality
and these Sobolev spaces can then be applied to produce various results on existence, uniqueness and
qualitative properties of weak solutions to boundary value problems for classes of degenerate elliptic,
degenerate parabolic and degenerate hyperbolic PDEs of second order written in divergence form.
These results are joint work with K.R. Payne and F. Punzo.

On the Drinfeld coproduct
In an unpublished note Drinfeld defined a new 'coproduct' on the affine quantum algebras Uq
(different from the Drinfeld-Jimbo one), which actually takes values in a completion of the tensor product
of Uq⊗Uq. In the simply laced case it is not too hard to prove that the
relations defining Uq are preserved by the Drinfeld coproduct (which is then a well defined
algebra homomorphism); but in the other cases the expression of the Drinfeld coproduct applied to the
Serre relations is very complicated, and till now the direct attempts to prove that it is zero failed.
In this talk a different strategy is presented: the bracket by the Drinfeld generators is deformed so
to get a locally nilpotent derivation D on a suitable algebra V; the study of the exponential of D, which
is an algebra automorphism of V, provides a proof that the Drinfeld coproduct is well defined.
This construction works for both the affine quantum algebras and the toroidal quantum algebras.
