An Affine-Invariant Bayesian Cluster Process with Split-Merge Gibbs Sampler
We develop a clustering algorithm which does not requires knowing the number of
clusters in advance. Furthermore, our clustering method is rotation-, scale- and
translation-invariant coordinatewise. We call it 'Affine-invariant Bayesian (AIB)
process'. A highly efficient split-merge Gibbs sampling algorithm is proposed.
Using the Ewens sampling distribution as prior of the partition and the profile
residual likelihoods of the responses under three different covariance matrix
structures, we obtain inferences in the form of a posterior distribution on partitions.
The proposed split-merge MCMC algorithm successfully and efficiently estimate the partition.
Our experimental results indicate that the AIB process outperforms other competing methods.
In addition, the proposed algorithm is irreducible and aperiodic, so that the estimate is
guaranteed to converge to the posterior distribution.

On quantifying dependence between random elements
In the introduction some relatively recent results on the maximum correlation
coefficient will be presented in two setups. The first deals with partial sums
of independent identically distributed random variables, and the second with the
components of a bivariate Gaussian stationary process. The main part of the talk
is devoted to a discussion of the properties required from a reasonable numerical
measure of dependence. My own contribution is in the construction of a calibrated
scale of models starting at independence and going away from it in a specified
direction.

Dislocation dynamics for the Peierls-Nabarro model
We consider an evolution equation arising in the Peierls-Nabarro model for crystal
dislocation. We study the evolution of such dislocation function and show that, at
a macroscopic scale, the dislocations have the tendency to concentrate at single
points of the crystal, where the size of the slip coincides with the natural
periodicity of the medium.
These dislocation points evolve according to the external stress and an interior
potential, which is either repulsive or attractive, depending on the orientation of
the dislocation. In case of attractive potentials, dislocation collisions occur.
Nevertheless, as time flows, the system relaxes exponentially fast. If time allows,
we also discuss the construction of some multibumps and chaotic orbits for this system.

Lower semicontinuity for nonautonomous surface integrals
New lower semicontinuity results are obtained for nonautonomous surface integrals
depending in a discontinuous way on the spatial variable.
Surface energies of this type occur in free-discontinuity problems, as in fracture mechanics,
when one considers quasistatic evolution of stratified, heterogeneous materials .

Nonlocal minimal surfaces
We give an introductory exposition about some surfaces which minimize a
nonlocal perimeter functional. These objects naturally arise in the study
of the interfaces of phase transitions, when the particles exhibit
long-range interactions or when boundary effects are present.
In addition, these nonlocal minimal surfaces have concrete applications in
several areas, such as image processing and mathematical biology.
We will present some results concerning interior regularity and rigidity
of nonlocal minimal surfaces, with some quantitative estimates and some
qualitative descriptions in several examples. We will describe also the
(rather unusual) boundary behavior of these object and their connection
with the fractional Allen-Cahn equation.

Fast and oblivious algorithms for dissipative and 2D wave equations
The use of time-domain boundary integral equations has proved very effective and efifcient
for three dimensional acoustic and electromagnetic wave equations.
In even dimensions and when some dissipation is present, time-domain boundary equations
contain an infinite memory tail. Due to this, computation for longer times becomes exceedingly
expensive. In this talk we show how fast and oblivious convolution quadrature, initially designed
for parabolic problems, can be used to significantly reduce both the cost and the memory
requirements of computing this tail. We analyse Runge-Kutta based algorithms and show
the result of some numerical experiments.

Cherednik algebras and Zhelobenko operators
We study canonical intertwining operators between modules of the trigonometric Cherednik algebra,
induced from the standard modules of the degenerate affine Hecke algebra. We show that these
operators correspond to the Zhelobenko operators for the affine Lie algebra of series A.
To establish the correspondence, we use the functor of Arakawa, Suzuki and Tsuchiya which maps
certain modules of the affine Lie algebra to modules of the Cherednik algebra.
This is a joint work with Sergey Khoroshkin.

Le conseguenze di Gödel
1930. 7 settembre.

Some asymptotic properties of geometric functionals of strongly dependent random fields
Limit theorems for the volumes of excursion sets of strongly dependent heavy-tailed random
fields will be presented. Special attention is paid to Student and Fisher random fields.
We also discuss the rate of convergence to the Rosenblatt-type distributions in non-central
limit theorems. In contrast to approaches based on the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method we
use direct probability methods. Some examples and simulation results are shown. The presentation
is based on the papers:

Convex solutions of the fractional Heat equation
We consider the non-local heat equation, with space diffusion driven
by the s-fractional Laplacian (1/2<s<1), coupled with a possibly
sign-changing initial datum. Non-local di ffusion problems have
received considerable attention recently, both due to applications in
crystal dislocations and phase thansition phenomena, and to
mathematically challenging features (see Bucur-Valdinoci, 2016).
Mainly by means of asymptotic estimates on the fractional heat kernel
(partly proved Blumenthal-Getoor, 1960, partly new), we prove an
existence/uniqueness result for the solution of such problem
satisfying a polynomial growth condition at in finity, provided the
initial datum has a similar growth. Our result complements that of
Barrios-Peral-Soria-Valdinoci, 2014, with the growth condition
replacing positivity of solutions.
Furthermore, we investigate geometric properties of such solutions,
proving that the fractional heat flow preserves convexity of the
initial datum (and something more). The path to this result involves a
detailed study of the properties of fractional Laplacians of convex
functions. (Joint work with Antonio Greco)

Tannakian categories, Gauss maps and the moduli of abelian varieties
To any holonomic D-module on an abelian variety one may attach an algebraic group
in a natural way, using a Tannakian description for the convolution product.
This allows to study subvarieties of abelian varieties via the groups for the
corresponding intersection cohomology D-module. For example, on the moduli space
of principally polarized abelian varieties, the groups for the theta divisor cut
out interesting strata that refine the Andreotti-Mayer stratification and conjecturally
characterize the loci of Jacobian varieties, intermediate Jacobians etc.
We are then led to various general questions: What information on a subvariety is encoded
in the corresponding group? How can one determine these groups? And can their representation
theory be used as a tool in geometry?
The first part of this talk will give a motivated introduction to the Tannakian formalism for
abelian varieties, starting from a generalization of the Green-Lazarsfeld generic vanishing
theorem. We will then discuss recent results that relate the arising Weyl groups to the
monodromy of Gauss maps and point towards a first possible answer to the above questions.
