The singular Nirenberg problem
I will consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian curvature
(under pointwise conformal change of the metric) on surfaces with
conical singularities. This question has been first raised by
Troyanov and it is a generalization of the Kazdan-Warner problem
for regular surfaces, known as the Nirenberg problem on the sphere.
Answer this question amounts to solve a singular differential problem
on the surface. This equation has been studied first in the case
K>0, where K denotes the curvature we want to prescribe.
I will present some new results (obtained in collaboration with R.
Lopez-Soriano) in the case K sign-changing. When the surface is the
sphere, under some mild conditions on the nodal set of K, we
derived some sufficient conditions on K and on the conical singularities
for the existence of solutions of (1). Even if we do not expect these
conditions to be necessary, I will explain why they are somehow sharp.

Quantitative flatness results and BV-estimates for nonlocal
minimal surfaces
We establish quantitative properties of minimizers and stable sets for
nonlocal interaction functionals, including the s-fractional perimeter
as a particular case. On the one hand, we establish universal BV-estimates
in every dimension n≥2 for stable sets. This nonlocal result is new
even in the case of s-perimeters and its local counterpart (for
classical stable minimal surfaces) was known, under some topological
assumptions, only in dimension n=3. On the other hand, we prove
quantitative flatness estimates for minimizers and stable sets in low
dimensions n=2,3. More precisely, we show that a stable set in BR,
with R large, is very close in measure to being a half space in B1
--- with a quantitative estimate on the measure of the symmetric
difference. As a byproduct, we obtain new classification results for
stable sets in the whole plane. This is a joint work with J. Serra
and E. Valdinoci.

Orientational order in two dimensions
A classic phenomenon in Statistical Mechanics is the emergence
of crystalline phases at low temperature. Until recently not
much was known about this problem in the case of atomistic systems
with unbounded degrees of freedom. I will explain the link between
crystal formation and orientational order. Then I will demonstrate
that orientational order emerges in many realistic two-dimensional
systems.

The semi-Lagrangian method using oblic interpolation
We develop a semi-Lagrangian scheme adapted to the case where
the solution present low oscillations in some fixed direction.
The method is analyzed for the 2D constant advection and applied
to the numerical resolution of the gyrokinetic equations.

Maximal representations, non Archimedean Siegel spaces,
and buildings
Maximal representations of the fundamental group G of a compact
surface S into a real symplectic group Sp(V) are natural generalisations
of the holonomy representations of G into SL(2,R) associated to hyperbolic
structures on S.
Maximal representations are injective, have discrete image, and their
images in Sp(V) can be seen as higher rank analogues of Kleinian groups.
A lot of activity in the last decade has been devoted to understand which
features of classical hyperbolic geometry and Teichmueller spaces
generalize to this setting. In this talk I will report on joint work
with Beatrice Pozzetti, were we study the structure of representations
associated to points in the real spectrum compactification of the
semi-algebraic set formed by characters of maximal representations.
The talk will be accessible to a general audience

Visioni simultanee Immagine come processo
Andando a
piano bidimensionale. In qualche misura, i software registrano,
strettamente interconnessi, anche applicati all'ambito urbano,
individuando -per affinità e differenze- alcuni degli
infiniti modi del conoscere e del narrare come autonomo spunto visionario.

'Senza alcun vincolo ufficiale': Tullio Levi-Civita e i
origine all'IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied
Mechanics).
italiana. Quest'ultimo punto, in particolare, solleva interrogativi
andavano emergendo in quegli anni all'incrocio tra matematica e ingegneria.

On the construction of relativistic quantum theories
We present a purely operator-algebraic construction of quantum (field)
theories on de Sitter space and Minkowski space, in space-time
dimension (d+1), d=1,2,3. Among the models constructed are the
famous models with polynomial interactions, and several other
well-known bosonic models, but also a large class of new models.
Our construction is based on a.) the classification of the unitary
irreducible representations of the Lorentz group; b.) the
Bisognano-Wichmann relations and the concept of modular localisation
introduced by Brunetti, Guido and Longo; c.) Araki's perturbation
theory for modular automorphisms, as well as its connection to
Connes' cocycles and non-commutative Radon-Nikodym derivatives.
No field, neither classical nor quantum, appears at any stage of
our construction.

Logarithmic structures, Artin fans, and the moduli
stack of tropical curves
Artin fans are logarithmic algebraic stacks that are
logarithmically etale over the base field. Despite their seemingly
abstract definition, the geometry of Artin fans can be described
completely in terms of combinatorial objects, so called Kato stacks, a
stack-theoretic generalization of K. Kato's notion of a fan. In this talk,
following a rapid introduction to logarithmic geometry from a modular
point of view, I am going to give an expository account of the theory of
Artin fans and explain how Thuillier's non-Archimedean skeleton of a
toroidal embedding can be understood as an analytification of the
associated Artin fan. In the special case of a toric variety, this simply
reduces to the fact that the Kajiwara-Payne tropicalization map is a
non-Archimedean analytic stack quotient. Finally, Artin fans also provide
the motivation for a current joint project with R. Cavalieri, M. Chan, and
J. Wise, in which we develop a stack-theoretic framework for the study of
tropical moduli spaces.

Unicellular swimmers: from mathematical modelling to biology
and robotics
Euglenids are unicellular aquatic organisms capable of moving either
by beating a flagellum or by executing dramatic shape changes. These
are accomplished thanks to a complex structure underlying the plasma
membrane, made of interlocking proteinaceous strips, microtubules,
and motor proteins. We study the mechanisms by which the sliding of
pellicle strips leads to shape control and locomotion, by means of
both theory (through the mechanics of active surfaces and its coupling
to computational fluid dynamics for the surrounding fluid) and
experiments. Moreover, we implement them into a new concept of
surfaces with programmable shape, obtained by assembling 3d-printed
strips in a construct mimicking the biological template. We show
that the subtle balance between constraints and flexibility leads
to a wide variety of shapes that can be obtained with relatively
simple controls. This suggests that euglenids exploit the passive
resistance of body parts to reduce the complexity of controlling
their shape.
