Birational Geometry of Moduli Spaces of Sheaves on Surfaces I
In these lectures, I will discuss recent developments in the birational
geometry of moduli spaces of sheaves on surfaces motivated by Bridgeland
stability conditions. My emphasis will be on concrete examples. After
reviewing the basic facts about Hilbert schemes of points and moduli
spaces of vector bundles on surfaces, I will introduce Bridgeland
stability conditions. I will then describe joint work with Arcara,
Bertram and Huizenga on the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes
of points on the projective plane. Building from there, I will discuss
recent joint work with Huizenga on computing nef cones of moduli spaces
of sheaves on surfaces, often using the projective plane as the
motivating example.

A deterministic particle approximation for nonlinear conservation laws
We present recent results on the deterministic particle approximation
of non-linear conservation laws. In [1], the unique entropy solution
to a scalar conservation law with a given initial datum in L∞
and with strictly monotone v is rigorously approximated by the empirical
measure of a follow-the-leader particle system. Said result is based on a
discrete version of the classical Oleinik one-sided jump condition for
L∞ initial data and on a BV contraction estimate for
BV initial data. The former requires some additional conditions on v,
which reduces to strict concavity of the flux in case v is a power law.
The convergence result also holds for the discrete density constructed
from the particle system. The results in [1] have been recently extended
to the Aw-Rascle-Zhang model for traffic flow in [2], where a similar BV
contraction estimate has been proven, based on the interpretation of the
system as a multi-population model. Finally, we shall present an extension
of this technique to the Hughes model for pedestrians on a bounded interval
with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In [3] we prove the rigorous convergence
of a suitable adaptation of the above particle scheme to the unique entropy
solution to the IBV problem for the Hughes model.

Optimizing the spectral radius of a matrix
The problem of minimizing and of maximizing the spectral radius on a set
of matrices is notoriously hard. Nevertheless, for some sets of a special
structure that problem admits an efficient solution. We consider sets of
nonnegative matrices with independent row uncertainties. Remarkable properties
of such sets were discovered by V. Blondel and Y. Nesterov in 2009, although
their applications in the game theory, in the theory of asynchronous systems,
etc. were studied before. The 'spectral simplex method' for maximizing/minimizing
the spectral radius over such sets demonstrates its surprising efficiency.
We prove its convergence, estimate the rate, and discuss applications to
dynamical systems, mathematical economics, etc. A link to a well-known
problem of indicators in the population dynamics will also be shown.

An achievement of De Finetti for which he has received little
recognition thus far is his contribution to the field of vector

Super-maximal representations from fundamental groups of punctured
spheres to PSL(2,R)
In a recent work with Nicolas Tholozan, aiming at refining the classical
Milnor-Wood inequality on character varieties, we have discovered a new
class of representations, that we have called super-maximal.
I will introduce them and show some of their properties. We will see that
(i) they are totally non-hyperbolic, i.e. simple closed curves are mapped
to non-hyperbolic elements of PSL(2,R);
(ii) they are geometrizable in a very strong sense by conical metrics;
(iii) they define compact components in certain relative character varieties,
hence generalizing a construction of Benedetto-Goldman.

A Garden of Eden theorem for Anosov diffeomorphisms on tori
Let f be an Anosov diffeomorphism of the n-dimensional torus Tn
and τ a continuous self-mapping of Tn commuting with f.
We prove that τ is surjective if and only if the restriction of τ
to each homoclinicity class of f is injective.
This is an analogue of the celebrated Garden of Eden theorem of Moore and
Myhill in symbolic dynamics.

Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA) recentemente entrato in funzione
in Cile.

Convergence to travelling waves in the Fisher-Kolmogorov equation
with a non-Lipschitzian reaction term
We consider the semilinear Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piscounov equation
for the advance of an advantageous gene in biology. Its nonsmooth reaction
function f(u) allows for the introduction of travelling waves with
a new profile. We study existence, uniqueness, and long-time asymptotic
behavior of the solutions of the initial value problem to a travelling wave.

Constant mean curvature surfaces in 3-manifolds admitting a
Killing vector field
A Killing submersion is a Riemannian submersion from an orien table
3-manifold to an orientable surface, such that the fibres of the
submersion are the integral curves of a Killing vector field without
zeroes. The interest of this family of structures is that it yields
a common treatment for a vast family of 3-manifolds, including, among
others, the simply-connected homogeneous ones and the warped products
with 1-dimensional fibres. In the first part of this talk we will give
existence and uniqueness results for Killing submersions in terms of
some geometric functions defined on the base surface.
In the second part, we will consider constant mean curvature surfaces
immersed in the total space of a Killing submersion which are transversal
to the Killing vector field. This will take us to the classification of
compact orientable stable surfaces with constant mean curvature immersed
in such 3-manifolds. Dropping the stability condition, we will show that
if the total space of a Killing submersion admits an immersed minimal
sphere then the base surface is also a sphere.

Computability of Folner sets and sofic approximations
In the class of finitely generated groups we recall equivalent
definitions for sofic groups, amenable groups, word problem and a
quantification of soficity, the sofic dimension growth. We present
the Minsky machines in order to define computability and to give an
idea of the construction of the Kharlampovich group, a finitely
presented solvable group with unsolvable word problem. We prove
the computability of Folner sets and the non computability of sofic
approximations for Kharlampovich group. More generally we study the
classes of groups with computable Folner sets, with subrecursive
sofic dimension growth and their stability properties.
