Elements of set theory. Maps. Equivalence and order relations. Quotient set and canonical projection. Cardinality of sets. - Arithmetic on Z and modular arithmetic.
Euclidean division in Z. Greatest common divisor. The Euclidean algorithm for the computation of the GCD. The fundamental Theorem of arithmetic. Congruences. Units of Z_m. Eulero-Fermat Theorem. Fermat's little Theorem. Wilson Theorem. The chinese remainder Theorem. - Groups
Algebraic structures: definitions and examples. Subgroups and normal subgroups of a group. Group homomorphisms. Quotient group. Homomorphism and correspondence theorems. Lagrange Theorem and Cayley Theorem. C_n, S_n, D_n, linear groups. Permutations and conjugation. - Rings and factorization
Examples: integral domains and fields. Ideals of a ring. Ring homomorphisms. Quotient ring. Homomorphism and correspondence theorems. Rings of polynomials and their universal property. Polynomials with coefficients in a domain. Field of fractions of an integral domain. Euclidean domains: examples. The ring of Gauss integers. Principal ideal domains. Prime and maximal ideals. Irreducible polynomials. Prime and irreducible elements of a domain. Unique factorization domains. Gauss Lemma. Eisenstein Criterion. The irreducible elements of Z[x]. Unique factorization in Z[x]. - The exam is divided into two parts: a written exam and an oral exam. Only students passing the written exam (score >14/30) have access to the oral exam.
- There will be two written exams along the course (midterm and final). If the score to each of these two tests will be positive, the student has directly access to the oral exam.

Knowledge and understanding: Comprendere il significato di struttura astratta e di identificazione di strutture a meno di isomorfismi. Comprendere l'uso delle relazioni di equivalenza per la definizione di enti astratti e delle relazioni di equivalenza compatibili per la definizione delle strutture quozienti. Distinguere fra le diverse cardinalità degli insiemi infiniti. Comprendere la differenza fra le definizioni di elemento irriducibile ed elemento primo in un dominio e l'importanza del teorema di fattorizzazione unica. Acquisire le prime nozioni sui gruppi e sull'ordine dei loro elementi.
Skills and attributes: Riconoscere l'iniettività e la suriettività di un'applicazione. Riconoscere relazioni di equivalenza e relazioni d'ordine. Calcolare il MCD in Z, Z[i] ed in K[x] tramite l'algoritmo euclideo delle divisioni successive. Risolvere le equazioni congruenziali lineari ed i sistemi di tali equazioni. Studiare l'irriducibilità di un polinomio in K[x] in casi semplici. Studiare la struttura di alcune famiglie di gruppi (ciclici, di permutazioni, diedrali). Applicare il teorema di omomorfismo in casi semplici.
