We will introduce the concept of the principal eigenvalue for fully nonlinear operators not in divergence form. In particular, we shall see that the principal eigenvalue can be defined through a max-min optimization problem. This will lead to an approximation of it. We will prove the convergence of the method and we discuss its implementation. Some examples where the exact solution is explicitly known show the effectiveness of the method.
