The selection of candidates for the Ph.D. program is done by public competition. A Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale, i.e., a Master degree, is needed to participate to the selection process. Holders of degrees obtained abroad and comparable to a Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale will also be considered.

Students expected to graduate by October 31th, 2018 will also be admitted to the selection process.

Students interested in applying must perform the following three steps.

Step 1

Follow this link  to find the official call for application: call for application (en), call for application (it).

For your convenience, this is a to-do list, following the instructions in the announcement.

  • According to Article XX of the call for application, you have to
        Register with the University information system;
Pay the application fee within the given deadline
    as described here.
  • If you hold a foreign academic degree, you will also have to send by ordinary mail additional documents (you can also have these documents hand delivered). The procedure is different for candidates holding an EU academic degree and those holding an extra-EU academic degree.

Candidates holding an EU academic degree can simply send or have hand-delivered a self-declaration stating that they hold the necessary degree; in case they do obtain a fellowship, they will have to produce an original certificate, according to the rules given right below.

Candidates holding an extra-EU academic degree must send a degree certificate with exams and grades as well as a declaration of equivalence for academic degrees by ordinary mail (or have it hand delivered) to:

Magnifico Rettore dell'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"
Area Offerta Formativa e Diritto allo Studio
        Settore Dottorato di Ricerca
        P.le Aldo Moro, 5 - 00185 Roma (Italy)

The envelope must bear, in addition to the address above indicated, the wording:
The code number (codice) is listed beside the Ph.D. course title.
Please refer to Article XX of the call for application/bando for further details.

  • If you are a foreign candidate applying for admission without a fellowship, also follow instructions as in Article XX of the call for application/bando.

Step 2

Download, fill in and save the cv+statement.pdf file:
    cv+statement-it.pdf italian version
    cv+statement-en.pdf english version
this is a writable pdf file that you can fill in using most of the common pdf readers (please note that occasionally some PDF viewer embedded in an internet browser might fail to correctly work).

Step 3

Follow this link and complete the application online by the deadline for application.
Please specify if you are also competing for a fellowship supported by a specific project.

You will be asked to upload the cv+statement file you have filled in and to provide names and email addresses of at most two professors willing to support your application. We will contact your references.

Make sure to inform them, as soon as possible, that we will need to receive their letters within Sunday July 8th !

On the basis of the documentation received, the selection committee will prepare a shortlist, which will be published on this web site by July 12th.

Candidates in the shortlist will be invited to two consecutive interviews, to be held on the same day, beginning on July 17th at 9 am (Lecture room Consiglio, Dipartimento di Matematica). The day and the time of the two interviews of each candidate will appear in the shortlist announcement.

See below for more information about the interviews. If candidates wish to have their interviews performed remotely (e.g., via Skype or Google Hangout or Apple FaceTime) they should motivate their request by emaling the Director of the Ph.D. program (
Please note that there will be no written exam.

Each candidate will be interviewed twice: the two interviews will be held one after the other, in the same day. Each interview will last 20-25 minutes approximately.

In the first interview the candidate will be questioned on his/her scientific interests (past and future); in the second interview the candidate will be questioned on background topics centered around his/her scientific interests. If the candidate is also applying for a fellowship supported by a specific project, then some questions may focus on topics related to the project itself.
