I will first recall Horikawa's description of surfaces with $K^2=2p_g - 4$ and $K^2 = 2p_g -3$ and their moduli spaces. Then I will describe some divisors contained in the closure of the moduli space of surfaces with $K^2=p_g-3$ inside the KSBA moduli space of stable surfaces for $p_g$ large enough. This is joint work with Ciro Ciliberto.
