Aims and scopes

The goal of the school is to offer a general overview of some recent topics in the area of optimal control for ordinary differential equations. A special emphasis will be given to pde's techniques, Hamilton-Jacobi equations, differential games and singular problems.
The school is mainly directed to PhD students, post-docs and young researchers in the areas of pdes, control, mathematical and numerical analysis who would like to enter the field of optimal control. We also want to present some emerging topics related to optimal control.
This event is part of the training activity of the SADCO ITN and is also open to other participants.

Courses

There will be five mini-courses:

CONTROL OF COUPLED FAST AND SLOW DYNAMICS
      Zvi Artstein (Weizmann Institute, Rehovot)

OPTIMAL CONTROL, HAMILTON-JACOBI EQUATIONS AND SINGULARITIES IN EUCLIDEAN AND RIEMANIANN SPACES
Piermarco Cannarsa and Carlo Sinestrari (Dipartimento di Matematica Università di Roma "Tor Vergata")

OPTIMAL CONTROL AND MEAN FIELD GAMES
Pierre Cardaliaguet (CEREMADE Université Paris IX Dauphine, Paris)

      QUANTUM FEEDBACK CONTROL
Matthew R. James (Australian National University, Canberra, Australia)

      INTELLIGENT GROUPS AND SPARSE CONTROLS
Benedetto Piccoli (Department of Mathematical Sciences, Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey, USA)

Timetable and Organization

The courses will be concentrated in the first 4 days, Monday to Thursday. The school will start on Monday at 9am and will end on Thursday, late in the afternoon. Following the school there will be a 1 day workshop with several talks given by leading experts in the field. The workshop will take place on Friday (the whole day).
The lectures of five mini-courses will occupy the mornings and part of the afternoon. All the courses will have 3 slots of 1.5 hours but the course of Cannarsa and Sinestrari which will have 4 slots of 1.5 hours in order to give an introduction to optimal control problems. There will be time for discussions every day after the end of the lectures.

Please consult the programme for more details.

We also plan to organize a poster session on Tuesday afternoon so if you intend to present a poster please write the authors names and the title of the poster in the notes inside the application form (see below) and send a short Latex abstract (max 1 page) to the organizers at ravello2012@mat.uniroma1.it  before May 15, 2012.
Please use the Latex form which is available through the WEB page.

Documents:
--   Program
--   Abstracts of the courses
--   Pdf files of the lectures
--   Workshop abstracts
--   Pdf files of the workshop talks
--   Poster session abstracts
--   Pdf files of the workshop poster session

All the activities will be held at the Biblioteca S. Francesco (at walking distance from the hotels). More information about the place can be found at the site http://www.ravellofrancescana.it/Biblioteca/Biblioteca.htm

Registration

There is no admission fee for this event but you must be registered. Registrations can be done ONLY via WEB.
Be aware that the number of participants is limited to 60. If you wish to attend and be added to the wait list, please fill out the registration form. The final deadline for registration is May 15, 2012.
WARNING: The school has reached its capacity, so we are unable to accept new applications.

Financial support

The school can (partially) support young participants who will not have access to other research funds.
A limited number of young researchers (PhD students, postdocs) not having a formal connection with the SADCO network will be given the opportunity to attend the Summer School and the Workshop. SADCO will offer a grant to cover travel and/or accommodation.
If you need financial support write to ravello2012@mat.uniroma1.it  indicating the amount you need. You should also send to the same address your up-dated CV and at least one recommendation letter (possibly as pdf files attached to the message). Please indicate the following subject in your e-mail "Request for financial support".
The request should arrive before April 30, 2012.
The organizers will confirm the financial support by the end of May.

Travel

Ravello is on the hills overlooking the Amalfi coast, one of the most famous sea locations in Italy. You can get many informations on Ravello on the Wikipedia site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravello

The closest international airport is Naples (about 80 km from Ravello). At Naples airport you can rent a car or go to Salerno by train. The closest railway station is Salerno, which is a common stop for the fast trains running from Roma to the South of Italy. From Salerno you can reach Ravello by bus or taxi (about 30 km).

A bus will start from the Salerno Railway Station at 5pm (the bus will have a clear indication of the SADCO school on the front). If there is a sufficient number of requests, we can also organize a bus transfer from the Napoli airport on Sunday afteroon (tentative hour: 4 pm) If you intend to use one of these bus transfer services, please write to ravello2012@mat.uniroma1.it BY AUGUST 20 simply indicating you name and the pick-up location (Salerno or Napoli). Similar bus transfer services will be organized at the and of the school, more informations will be available in Ravello.

Accommodation

The organization has made a pre-booking of several rooms in Ravello. In particular, we have rooms at the following hotels: Graal, Parsifal, Bonadies and Giordano. Moreover, some rooms in small apartments are also available.
We need to confirm the rooms by the middle of June, so all the participants are kindly invited to fill the accommodation form available here by June 10, 2012.
After that date we can not guarantee the hotel accommodation and you can book directly your room (for example via www.booking.com).
