Questo convegno è un naturale proseguimento dei periodi di ricerca intensiva Differential Geometry and Topology e Extremal Kähler Metrics and Kähler-Ricci Flow, che si sono tenuti a Pisa rispettivamente nell'autunno 2004 e marzo 2008, e del convegno Geometry and Mathematical Physics, che si è tenuto a Albuquerque nell'ottobre 2008.
La geometria Kähler e la geometria Sasakiana, con le loro intime correlazioni, costituiscono un settore di ricerca in rapida diffusione. Negli ultimi anni sono apparsi risultati di gran rilevanza scientifica, tra cui l'esistenza di metriche di Einstein su sfere di omotopia e di omologia, l'estensione dei risultati di Hamilton-Perelman sul flusso di Ricci, e applicazioni a modelli matematici di teoria delle stringhe. Il libro "Sasakian Geometry" (Oxford Mathematical Monographs, 2008) di Ch. P. Boyer e K. Galicki tratta ampiamente di questi argomenti e delle corrispondenti applicazioni fisiche.
Questo convegno è stato concepito in memoria di Krzysztof Galicki (1958-2007). Kris è stato spesso in Italia, e ha collaborato con matematici a Roma e a Cagliari. Oltre ad aver diretto una tesi di dottorato a Milano, ha contribuito a varie occasioni scientifiche -Roma 1, Centro De Giorgi, Cortona- l'ultima delle quali a Lecce nell'estate 2007. Noi membri del comitato organizzatore e del comitato scientifico abbiamo sempre visto Kris come un profondo legame tra la geometria differenziale europea e la geometria differenziale americana, e speriamo che questo convegno serva a rinnovare questo legame.
Per questo motivo abbiamo organizzato questo convegno: dedicato alla sua memoria, e teso a far incontrare argomenti e persone che sono stati toccati dalla matematica di Kris.
This Workshop is a natural sequel of the intensive research periods Differential Geometry and Topology and Extremal Kähler Metrics and Kähler-Ricci Flow held in Pisa (Fall 2004 and Spring 2008) and of the Conference Geometry and Mathematical Physics held in Albuquerque (October 2008).
Kähler and Sasakian Geometry and their interplay are a rapidly spreading research domain. Among the remarkable results of the last years are the existence of Einstein metrics on homotopy and homology spheres, the extension of Hamilton-Perelman's results on the Ricci flow and applications to mathematical models of string theory. The monograph "Sasakian Geometry" (Oxford Mathematical Monographs, 2008) by Ch. P. Boyer and K. Galicki presents a wide panorama on this topic and applications to physics.
This Workshop was conceived in memory of Krzysztof Galicki (1958-2007). Kris had several stays in Italy and collaborations with people in Rome and Cagliari, directed one Ph. D. thesis in Milan, gave many seminars in occasion of conferences and meetings in Italy (Rome La Sapienza, Centro De Giorgi, Cortona), the last of which in Lecce in summer 2007. We (the members of the organizing and the scientific commitees) have always felt Kris as a link between European and American differential geometry, and we would like this Workshop to be an occasion when this link is perpetuated.
This is why we organized this Workshop in Rome: it is dedicated to his memory, and it is meant at gathering some important issues and people that have been touched by Kris' mathematics.
