Abstract: This talk will give a bird's eye view of about 50 years of progress in quantum gravity by focusing on one of its most surprising features; namely, the correspondence it establishes between subtle information-theoretical quantities in quantum field theory and not-so-subtle geometrical quantities. The Bekenstein-Hawking formula and the holographic duality will play a central role in our story.
