The classical Torelli theorem, which recovers a smooth curve from its polarized Jacobian, was proved by Andreotti through an argument that reconstructs the canonical model of the curve by means of the ramification of a certain finite map. In this talk, we demonstrate how to generalize Andreotti's geometric approach to nodal curves, and we relate this to the work of Caporaso and Viviani on the Torelli theorem for stable curves.
