We consider a variant of the Hofstadter Q sequence, that we call a "dilute Hofstadter Q sequence", where only one nested term is retained while the other one is replaced with a given sequence f(n). We investigate the conditions on f(n) for the dilute Hofstadter sequence to exist and discuss possible relations with Hofstadter's original problem.
