Arte e matematica: interconnesse in molteplici modi

An optimal control approach to Reinforcement Learning
Optimal control and Reinforcement Learning (RL) deal both with sequential decision-making problems, although they use different tools. We have investigated the connection between these two research areas and in this talk, I will present the results of my thesis.  In the first part, I will discuss an optimal control problem with uncertain dynamics showing how this formulation can describe what happens during some RL algorithms.  In particular, I will present some convergence results for the value function and for the optimal controls. In the second part, I will propose a new online algorithm dealing with LQR problems where the state matrix A is unknown. Joint works with M. Falcone, M. Palladino and A. Pacifico.

Around volume and macroscopic scalar curvature
L. Guth proved the following theorem: if an hyperbolic manifold endowed with an auxiliary Riemannian metric has sufficiently small volume in comparison to the hyperbolic one, then we can find in its universal cover a ball of radius 1 whose volume is bigger than an hyperbolic ball of radius 1. This theorem is strongly related to a conjecture by R. Schoen, and is conjectured to hold for any radius. In this talk, I will present some new results around this topic. Based on a joint work with S. Karam.

The Modern Mathematics of Deep Learning
Despite the outstanding success of deep neural networks in real-world applications, ranging from science to public life, most of the related research is empirically driven and a comprehensive mathematical foundation is still missing. At the same time, these methods have already shown their impressive potential in mathematical research areas such as imaging sciences, inverse problems, or numerical analysis of partial differential equations, sometimes by far outperforming classical mathematical approaches for particular problem classes. The goal of this lecture is to first provide an introduction into this new vibrant research area. We will then survey recent advances in two directions, namely the development of a mathematical foundation of deep learning and the introduction of novel deep learning-based approaches to solve inverse problems and partial differential equations.

A Schrödinger-Bopp-Podoslky system with Neumann conditions
The existence of multiple solutions to a system formed by Schrödinger and Bopp-Podolsky equations is presented. From a Physics perspective, this amounts to understanding the behavior of a particle (Schrödinger) interacting with an electromagnetic field (Bopp-Podolsky) which is not assigned, but rather is generated by the particle itself from the Neumann conditions imposed on the boundary. The static case is considered, as well as a purely electrostatic field. The approach is variational: (infinitely many) solutions appear as critical points of an unbounded functional. To overcome the unboundedness, we consider some constraints and apply Theorem of Lagrange Multipliers in a Hilbert manifold together with Ljusternik-Schnirelmann theory. Joint work with Gaetano Siciliano.

Motivic Springer Theory
Algebras and their representations can often be constructed geometrically in terms of convolution of cycles. For example, the Springer correspondence describes how irreducible representations of a Weyl group can be realised in terms of a convolution action on the vector spaces of irreducible components of Springer fibers. Similar situations yield the affine Hecke algebra, quiver Hecke algebra (KLR algebra), quiver Schur algebra or Soergel bimodules. In this spirit, we show that these algebras and their representations can be realised in terms of certain equivariant motivic sheaves called Springer motives. On our way, we will discuss weight structures and their applications to motives as well as Koszul and Ringel duality. This is joint work with Catharina Stroppel. Quantum Information: Extending the Bloch sphere model for two o more qubits, and relation with Group Theory
The Bloch Sphere Model can be used to easily visualize the effect of applying quantum gates on a qubit, or the temporal evolution of the state of a two-level system described by a Hamiltonian. It is clear that some geometric pictures give us great help in understanding some quantum information or quantum algorithms problems. Thus, the representation of a unit vector by means of the Bloch Sphere is powerful for a single qubit. Nevertheless, there is no commonly accepted representation for a quantum system for two o more qubits so far, even when we can find some papers reported in the literature on the subject. And this is the objective of the first part of the talk. The second one is the study of the relationship with the Lie Group representing a quantum state. It is known that groups SU(2) or SO(3) can represent the behaviour of a system of one single qubit, but there is an interesting field of research when the number of qubits is increasing.

Paving Springer Fibers. The E7 case
In the paper De Concini, C.; Lusztig, G.; Procesi, C. Homology of the zero-set of a nilpotent vector field on a flag manifold. J. Amer. Math. Soc. 1 (1988), no. 1, 15-34, it was proven the so called Springer fiber \(\mathcal{B}_n\) for any nilpotent element \(n\) in a complex simple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) has homological properties that suggest that \(\mathcal{B}_n\) should have a paving by affine spaces. This last statement was proved to hold in the case in which \(\mathfrak{g}\) is classical but remained open for exceptional groups in types E7 and E8. In a joint project with Maffei we are trying to fill this gap. At this point our efforts has been successful in type E7 and "almost" in type E8 were one is reduced to show it only in one case. The goal of the talk is to survey the problem and give an idea on how to show our new results.
