Equivariant Index, Traces and Representation Theory
K-theory of \(C^*\)-algebras associated to a Lie group can be understood both from the geometric point of view, via Baum-Connes assembly map, and from the representation theoretic point of view via harmonic analysis of Lie groups. A K-theory generator can be viewed as the equivariant index of some Dirac operator, but also carries information of irreducible unitary representations. Applying orbital traces to the K-theory group, we obtain the equivariant index as a fixed point formula which, for each K-theory generator for (limit of) discrete series, recovers Harish-Chandra’s character formula on the representation theory side. This is a noncompact analogue of Atiyah-Segal-Singer fixed point theorem in relation to the Weyl character formula. Comparing two groups of inner form with each other, one further recovers Shelstad’s Character identity using the equivariant index. This is joint work with Peter Hochs.

A K-theoretic Selberg trace formula
The close relationship between index theory and representation theory is a classical theme. In particular, the trace formula has been studied through the lens of index theory by several researchers already. In joint work with Bram Mesland and Haluk Sengun, we take this connection further and obtain a formulation of the trace formula in K-theoretic terms. The central objects here are the K-theory groups of the \(C^*\)-algebras associated to a semisimple Lie group \(G\) and its lattices \(\Gamma\). The geometric side of the K-theoretic trace formula is calculated by the equivariant index introduced in the previous lecture and the spectral side is a finite sum involving multiplicities of unitary representations in \(L^2(G/\Gamma)\).
