Some recent progress around the problem of relaxation of the area functional
We introduce the area functional, the map which associates to any smooth function the area of its graph. We then discuss how to extend this functional to the space of general L1 functions with values in RN. The question of studying the domain and the values of the obtained extended functional has attracted much interest in the last decades since De Giorgi. In particular its behaviour when N>1 remains a big mistery and leaves several open problems, some of which posed by De Giorgi himself. We will focus on some of these open questions and discuss what kind of main issues come out when facing them. Some progress has been obtained when analyzing the area functional on piecewise constant maps.

On upper bounds to the energy of the dilute Bose gas
In this course we will review recent work on the different upper bounds for the ground state energy of a gas of interacting bosons in the thermodynamic limit. We start by considering quasi-free states to realize that these reproduce the leading order asymptotics of the energy but not the expected first correction term. This part is based on work by Erdos-Schlein-Yau and Napiorkowski-Reuvers-Solovej. Then we pass to the more involved trial states by Yau-Yin and prove that such a state can indeed give the expected correction term. The course will essentially be elementary. Only a basic knowledge of mathematical quantum mechanics will be needed.

Polynomial mixing time for edge flips on quadrangulations.
This talk will revolve around recent joint work with Alexandre Stauffer in which we give the first polynomial upper bound for the relaxation time of the edge flip Markov chain on rooted quadrangulations. A quadrangulation of size n is a connected planar graph endowed with a cellular embedding in the sphere such that all of its n faces have degree 4, considered up to orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the sphere itself; we call it rooted when it is endowed with a distinguished oriented edge. Given a (rooted) quadrangulation of size n, a step of the Markov chain we are interested in a so-called "edge flip" consists in choosing an edge uniformly at random, deleting it and replacing it with one of the three possible edges (two when the original edge is adjacent to only one face) which, if drawn, recreate a quadrangulation. We will see how one can relate the edge flip chain on quadrangulations to a "leaf translation" chain on plane trees (which has a natural interpretation as a chain on the set of Dyck paths, and on other Catalan structures as well). Having discussed how to set up a successful comparison between the two chains which exploits the well-known bijection by Schaeffer and a specific construction of leaf translations as sequences of edge flips, we shall estimate the relaxation time of the leaf translation chain by improving on a result by Movassagh and Shor.

About the Severi Problem on toric surfaces
In 1986, J. Harris proved that the Severi variety \(V^{d,g}\):={irreducible nodal curve of degree d and genus g in the projective plane} is irreducible for any g<(d-1)(d-2)/2. To do so, Harris proceeds in 2 steps: (1) any irreducible component of \(V^{d,g}\) contains the locus of irreducible nodal rational curves in its closure, (2) the monodromy of the space of rational curves permute all the sheets of \(V^{d,g}\). Using the same strategy, we are interested in determining the irreducibility of the Severi variety \(V^{X,|L|,g}\):={irreducible nodal curve of genus g in a given ample linear system |L| on a toric surface X}. In 2007, I. Tyomkin proved that \(V^{X,|L|,g}\) is irreducible for any ample linear system |L| on a Hirzebruch surface X. In 2014, he provided a pair (X,|L|) for which \(V^{X,|L|,1}\) is reducible. In this talk, we aim to show that for any toric surface X, the irreducibility of \(V^{X,|L|,g}\) depends only on the surface X provided that |L| is 'big' enough. Apparently, the step (1) is already available in this generality from the work of [Caporaso-Harris, Vakil]. For step (2), we will show how one can compute the monodromy of the space \(V^{X,|L|,0}\) using rather elementary computations and a bit of combinatorics. This is a work in progress.
