Asymptotic problems for the Langevin equation with variable friction
I will discuss some recent results on two asymptotic problems for the Langevin equation with
variable friction coefficient. The first is the small mass asymptotic behavior, known as the
Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation, of the Langevin equation with strictly positive variable
friction. The second result concerns the limiting behavior of the solution when the friction
vanishes in regions of the domain. The results generalize previous works due to Freidlin-Hu
and Freidlin-Hu-Wentzell. The talk will be based on joint work with P.E. Souganidis (University
of Chicago) and H.V. Tran (University of Wisconsin-Madison).

Reaction-diffusion systems with dissipation of mass: old and new results
We consider positivity-preserving reaction-diffusion systems of the form
\[\partial_t u_i-d_i\Delta d_i=f_i(u),\qquad u=(u_1,\dots,u_m)\]
under the Neumann boundary conditions, with the structure condition \(\sum f_i\le 0\), which guarantees
that the total mass is nonincreasing in time. Such systems are often encountered in applications, for
instance in models of reversible chemistry. Whereas global existence and boundedness of solutions is
easy in the equidiffusive case \(d_iquiv d\), the question becomes quite involved in the case when the
\(d_i>0\) are different (a case which is indeed relevant in models of chemical reactions), and there has
been an abundant mathematical literature on this question in the past 30 years.
Various sufficient conditions on the nonlinearities \(f_i\) for global existence are known, as well as
examples of finite time blow-up for certain systems. The latter is a special case of the so-called
diffusion induced blow-up phenomenon. We will discuss old and new results on this subject.

Bogoliubov theory in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime
Since 1947 Bogoliubov treatment of Bose-Einstein condensation for interacting bosons has
represented the guide model to thinking about Bose gases. Remarkably, such a theory predicts a
linear excitation spectrum (in sharp contrast with the quadratic dispersion of free
particles) and provides expressions for the thermodynamic functions which are believed to be
correct in the dilute limit. However, there are only a few cases where the predictions of Bogoliubov
theory can be actually proved. In particular, one of the main mathematical issues is to recover the
physical intuition that the parameter that should appear in the expressions of the physical quantities
is the scattering length of the interaction.
In this talk I will discuss how the predictions of Bogolibov theory can be rigoursly obtained in the
case of systems of N interacting bosons trapped in a box with volume one and interacting through a
weak, repulsive potential with scattering length 1/N (Gross-Pitaevskii regime).

Complete non-compact G2-manifolds from asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau 3-folds
G2-manifolds are the Riemannian 7-manifolds with G2 holonomy and in many respects can be regarded
as 7-dimensional analogues of Calabi-Yau 3-folds. In joint work with Mark Haskins and Johannes
Nordström we construct infinitely many families of new complete non-compact G2 manifolds (only
four such manifolds were previously known). The underlying smooth 7-manifolds are all circle bundles
over asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The metrics are circle-invariant and have an
asymptotic geometry that is the 7-dimensional analogue of the geometry of 4-dimensional ALF
hyperkähler metrics. After describing the main features of our construction I will concentrate
on some illustrative examples, describing how recent results in Calabi-Yau geometry about isolated
singularities and their resolutions can be used to produce examples of complete G2-manifolds.

Sobolev inequality in arbitrary domains
A theory of Sobolev inequalities in arbitrary open sets in Rn is offered. Boundary
regularity of domains is replaced with information on boundary traces of trial functions and of their
derivatives up to some explicit minimal order. The relevant Sobolev inequalities involve constants
independent of the geometry of the domain, and exhibit the same critical exponents as in the classical
inequalities on regular domains. Our approach relies upon new representation formulas for Sobolev functions,
and on ensuing pointwise estimates which hold in any open set. This is a joint work with A. Cianchi.

Some qualitative results for degenerate parabolic equations with inhomogeneous density
We discuss properties of solutions like finite speed of propagation, the interface blow up phenomenon,
and sup bounds, which depend on the behavior of the density coefficient at infinity. It turns out that
the different possible behaviors are connected with certain critical exponents.

C*-algebras associated to horocycle flows
Murray and von Neumann introduced the notion of crossed product to give examples of different types
of factors. Since then many von Neumann algebras and C*-algebras with interesting properties have
been constructed following this pattern. We will give an example of a class of C*-algebras to which
the classification result by Elliott, Gong, Lin and Niu of 2015 cannot be applied and see some of
their properties.

Universally optimal mitigation strategies for leakage of information
Software systems may leak information about confidential data. Information theory helps in
mathematically analyze and automatically quantify such leaks.
However, there is an (uncountable) infinity of leakage measures. Hence a question arises: can we
design countermeasures to information leakage that are universally optimal, i.e. that guarantee minimal
leakage no matter which leakage measure is chosen? We show contexts when this can be achieved, a
counterexample to a general solution and discuss potential applications of these techniques to security
and privacy problems. (This is a joint work with Arman Khouzani)
