Minimal time issues for the observability of Grushin like equations
The goal of this talk is to discuss the observability properties of degenerate parabolic equations. Namely, when considering a Grushin operator of the form ∂t-∂xx-|x|2yy, there is a whole line of degeneracy at x=0, which is known from recent works to strongly modify the observability properties of this operator. In particular, while the usual heat equation is observable from any open set in any small time (we will recall the precise definition of observability we are dealing with), the Grushin operator may require some strictly positive minimal time to be observable, depending on the observation set. The question thus is to give explicit estimates on this minimal time and to link it with the geometry under consideration. We shall present several results in this direction, in which we are able to characterize completely the minimal time required for observability. In order to do this, we will use Carleman estimates to estimate precisely the cost of observability of the family of 1-d heat equations whose operators are ∂t-∂xx+n2|x|2 in the asymptotics n→∞. This is a joint work with Karine Beauchard (ENS Rennes) and Jérémi Dardé (Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse).

Automorphisms of C2 with an invariant Fatou component biholomorphic to C×C*
I will present the construction of a family of automorphisms of C2 having an invariant, non-recurrent Fatou component biholomorphic to C×C* and which is attracting, in the sense that all the orbits converge to a fixed point on the boundary of the component. (This is a joint work with Filippo Bracci and Berit Stensones).

Matematica e Poesia: analogie e convergenze

Bibiografia: Angelo Guerreggio, Pietro Nastasi, Matematica in camicia nera. Il regime e gli scienziati. Bruno Mondadori, Milano, 2005.

Enhanced Sanov theorem for Brownian rough paths and an application to interacting particles
We establish a Sanov type large deviation principle for an ensemble of interacting Brownian rough paths. As application a large deviations principle for the (k-layer, enhanced) empirical measure of weakly interacting diffusions is obtained. This in turn implies a propagation of chaos result in rough path spaces and allows for a robust subsequent analysis of the particle system and its McKean-Vlasov type limit. The talk is based on a work in collaboration with J.D. Deuschel, P. Friz and M. Slowik

Special symmetries in O'Grady's manifolds
A deformation invariant of irreducible symplectic manifolds is the group of automorphisms acting trivially on second cohomology. In this talk, we review known results and compute such an invariant for two special deformation classes found by O'Grady. This is a joint work with M. Wandel.

Muscle synergies for motor control
A fundamental challenge in neuroscience is understanding how the central nervous system (CNS) succeeds in coordinating the many degrees-of-freedom of the musculoskeletal system to control limb movements. A long-standing hypothesis is that the CNS relies on muscle synergies, coordinated activations of groups of muscles, to simplify motor control. Evidence that the combinations of a small number of muscle synergies underlies the generation of muscle activation patterns has come from several studies performed in the last two decades with different species and experimental tasks. Muscle synergies, extracted from multi-muscle electromyographic (EMG) recordings using decomposition algorithms such as non-negative matrix factorization, capture regularities in the spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal organization of the muscle patterns. However, whether muscle synergies are only a parsimonious description of the regularities of the motor commands rather than a key feature of their neural organization is still debated. Further support for a neural organization of muscle synergies has come from testing muscle synergies as a causal model and from identifying their neural substrates. If muscle synergies are organized by the CNS they must affect the difficulty in learning or adapting motor skills. An experiment with human subjects using myoelectric control of a mass in a virtual environment has tested the prediction that it must be harder to adapt to perturbations that require new or modified synergies than to adapt to perturbations that can be compensated by recombining existing synergies. To identify neural substrates of muscle synergies, hand movements were evoked by electrical stimulation of motor cortical areas of non-human primates. The evoked muscle activation patterns could be accurately reconstructed by the combinations of a few muscle synergy highly similar those extracted from voluntary hand movements, suggesting a cortico-spinal organization of muscle synergies. In sum, these results suggest that muscle synergies are modular elements organized by the CNS to provide a low-dimensional representation of the motor commands allowing to control the musculoskeletal system by directly mapping goals into a small number of synergy combination parameters.
