120 Years of Mathematics Through the Eyes of the American Mathematical Monthly
For over 120 years, the American Mathematical Monthly has served as Mathematics' most widely read journal for general audience papers. The Monthly holds a unique niche amongst journals in the Sciences, as its articles are intended to inform, stimulate, challenge, enlighten, and even entertain; Monthly articles are meant to be read, enjoyed, and discussed, rather than just archived. The long history of the Monthly does not just include papers which had significant impact on both the research and teaching communities, but its articles can be used as a mirror which reflects the trends and attitudes of not only Mathematicians, but academics in general. In this talk, I will briefly cover the history and accomplishments of the Monthly. The talk will conclude with a summary of two recent Monthly articles dealing with the constant Pi: 'On Pi Day 2014, Pi's normality is still in question', by Jonathan Borwein and David Bailey; 'I Prefer Pi: A Brief History and Anthology of Articles in the American Mathematical Monthly', by Jonathan Borwein and Scott Chapman.

Matrix reduction approaches to interpolation problems: a review with remarks, I & II
About ten years ago M Dumnicki developed some techniques for interpolation problems related to a careful study of the rank of the matrices involved. Using these techniques he was able to extend the state of the art at the time, bringing certain problems into the range of computer analyses; this enabled him to prove that linear systems in the plane satisfied the SGHH conjecture for homogeneous multiplicities up to 42, the record then. We'll review the method, and consider some refinements, and applications to systems with ten points. The talk should be accessible to non-experts.

Birational stability of the orbifold cotangent bundle
We show that a foliation on a projective complex manifold is algebraic with rationally connected (closure of) leaves exactly when its minimal slope with respect to some movable class is positive. This extends and strengthens former classical results by Y. Miyaoka and Bogomolov-McQuillan. Applications to foliations, hyperbolicity (a converse to a result of J.-P. Demailly) and moduli will be mentioned. This is a joint work with Mihai Paun, partly based on a former joint work with T. Peternell.

Billiards and rigid rotations
Probably one of the most famous open problems concerning biliard systems is the Birkhoff conjecture: 'If a biliard map is integrabile than the boundary of the biliard table is an ellipse'. Recently Treschev conjectured that there might exist analytic biliards, different from ellipses, for which the dynamics in the neighborhood of the period-2 orbit is conjugated to a rigid rotation, suggesting a very interesting example of local integrability for biliard tables different from ellipses. However the result of Treschev is only formal in the sense that he finds only a formal power series. Our aim is to prove the convergence of such series. This is a joint work (in progress) with M. Procesi.

Momentum polytopes of multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifolds
Generalizing T. Delzant's classification of toric symplectic manifolds, F. Knop has shown that multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifolds are classified by their momentum polytope and generic isotropy group. In this talk I will explain how the theory of (smooth affine) spherical varieties can be used to give a combinatorial characterization of the momentum polytopes of these manifolds. This is joint work with G. Pezzini.
