Diffeomorphic approximation of planar elastic deformations
To study existence and regularity of solutions of some standard variational models in
nonlinear elasticity, it is convenient to know whether it is possible to approximate
homeomorphisms u with diffeomorphisms u_n whose elastic energy is close to that of u.
A big step in this direction would be to show the existence of an approximating sequence
(un)n such that un converges to u and, at the same time,
the inverse of un converges to the inverse of u in a suitable sense. We briefly
introduce hyperelasticity and the pure-displacement boundary problem, then we discuss the
approximation of planar homeomorphisms in the Sobolev, bi-Sobolev and BV (actually bi-BV)
settings. This is a joint work with Aldo Pratelli (FAU Erlangen-N urnberg).

A survey on the spectrum of Riemannian manifolds and their minimal submanifolds
In this talk, I will describe some classical and recent results about the spectrum of the
Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds, focusing on noncompact ones.
After an overview of the interplay between curvature and spectrum in the intrinsic case,
I will then consider minimal immersions Mm→Nn
in Euclidean or hyperbolic space, and show some new criteria to ensure that the Laplace-Beltrami
operator of M has purely discrete (respectively, purely essential) spectrum, addressing a question
posed by S.T. Yau. The geometric conditions involve the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of
φ and the behaviour at infinity of the density function
Θ(r)=vol(M∩Brn)/vol(Brm) ,
where Brn and Brm are geodesic balls of radius r
in Nn and Mm, respectively.
This is based on joint works with G. Pacelli Bessa, L.P. Jorge, J.F. Montenegro, B.P. Lima,

The Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture for parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
The Dyer-Lusztig Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture states that a Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial is determined
by the underlying poset structure. We discuss the problem of combinatorial invariance in the
parabolic setting.

Modular Tensor Categories in Conformal Field Theory and their classification problem
MTCs are finite braided tensor categories where the braiding is non-degenerate, i.e., maximally non-symmetric.
They owe their name to the well-known fact that this non-degeneracy is actually equivalent to the
appearance of representations of the modular group PSL(2,Z) by means of certain canonically defined matrices
S, T (also called modular data). I will explain their relevance in physics (more precisely, in models of chiral CFT)
and comment on a trace formula for self-braidings by means of modular data, which can be used in the classification
problem of MTCs.

A metric approach to diffusion and curvature via optimal transport
Lower Ricci curvature bounds play a crucial role in many geometric and functional inequalities.
In addition to the direct characterization in terms of the curvature tensor in Riemannian geometry,
two other important approaches have been introduced to capture the analytic properties of the Ricci
curvature: a first one, due to Bakry-Emery, is based on the notion of Gamma-calculus and is strictly
related to the behaviour of the Heat flow.
A second, more recent, approch have been proposed by Lott-Villani and Sturm: it involves the
geometric properties of optimal transport and Entropy functionals.
We will present the basic ideas behind the two viewpoints in a simple Euclidean setting, and we will
show how the metric-variational theory of gradient flows provides a key point to prove their
equivalence, leading to a beautiful and rich theory in general metric-measure spaces.

Metastability for the Widom-Rowlinson model
In this talk I will discuss the Widom-Rowlinson model on a finitevtwo-dimensional box
subject to a stochastic dynamics in which particles are randomly created and annihilated
inside the box according to an infinite reservoir with a given chemical potential.
The particles are viewed as points carrying disks and the energy of a particle configuration
is the volume of the union of the disks minus the sum of the volumes of the disks.
Consequently, the interaction between the particles is attractive. We are interested in the
metastable behaviour of the system at low temperature when the chemical potential is supercritical.
In particular, we start with the empty box and are interested in the first time when the box is fully
covered by disks.
In order to achieve the transition from empty to full, the system needs to create a sufficiently
large droplet, called critical droplet, which triggers the crossover. We compute the distribution
of the crossover time, identify the size and the shape of the critical droplet, and investigate how
the system behaves on its way from empty to full. This is a joint work in progress with F. den
Hollander, S. Jansen, R. Kotecky.
