Variational and topological methods for nonlocal fractional problems
A very interesting area of nonlinear analysis lies in the study of elliptic equations involving fractional
operators. Recently, a great attention has been focused on these problems, both for the pure mathematical
research and in view of concrete real-world applications.
Indeed, this type of operators appear in a quite natural way in different contexts, such as the description
of several physical phenomena. In particular, nonlocal critical equations are relevant for their relations
with problems arising in differential geometry and in physics, where a lack of compactness occurs.
Motivated by this wide interest in the current literature, also in connection with the celebrated Brezis-Nirenberg
problem, in the first part of the talk we will describe the state of the art for nonlocal critical problems involving
the fractional Laplacian operator or its generalizations. Successively, some recent existence and multiplicity
results will be discussed. In conclusion, certain open problems will be briefly presented.

(De)localization in topological insulators: a Wannier-function approach
In this talk I will describe how Wannier functions (WFs) provide a powerful tool to investigate localization
and transport properties of 2D and 3D gapped periodic quantum systems, including Chern insulators,
quantum Hall systems, and time-reversal symmetric (TRS) topological insulators. In the first part of the talk,
I will present a 'localization dichotomy' for Chern and quantum Hall insulators, stating that either there exist
exponentially localized WFs (in which case the Hall conductivity vanishes), or any system of WFs yields a
divergent second moment of the position operator; no intermediate regimes are allowed. The second part of
the talk will instead be devoted to TRS topological insulators: I will discuss how their Z2
invariants arise as topological obstructions to the existence of localized and time-reversal symmetric WFs,
and how to construct the latter in the unobstructed case.

Charge and spin in a two-dimensional electron gas: always an exciting encounter
Conventional electronics is based on the electron charge, whereas spintronics exploits the spin degree
of freedom as, for instance, in GMR (giant magnetoresistance) devices. Current research, both at
fundamental and applied level, aims at efficiently combine charge and spin with the purpose of developing
new functionalities and improved performances. It is not surprising then that spin to charge interconversion
phenomena, as the spin Hall (SHE) and the spin galvanic (SGE) effects, are intensively investigated in a
number of different systems ranging from semiconductors to metals and complex insulating oxides.
In this talk I will start with a brief overview of the experimental setups developed to measure the SHE and
the SGE. Then, I will introduce the two main theoretical ingredients at the basis of our theoretical understanding
about the origin of these effects.
These are the modified symmetry conditions existing at surfaces and interfaces and the spin-orbit coupling,
which in solid state systems manifests in a number of different ways. Finally, I will show how it is possible to
describe the SHE and SGE in terms of an effective non-abelian gauge theory, which allows to derive a set of
transport and diffusion equations for the coupled spin and charge dynamics.

Looking at the quantum states with the eyes of algebraic quantum field theory
Algebraic methods proved to be very successful in the context of quantum field theory on curved
spacetimes. A quantum theory could be also understood as an assignment of an algebra of observables
on the spacetime and an algebraic state, which is a positive, linear and normalized functional on the
algebra of observables. In the first part of the talk, we outline a reason why algebraic states should be
determinated nonlocally by the geometry, studying the abelian Chern-Simons theory formulated in the
algebraic approach. Thereafter, we propose a 'global' construction for Dirac fields in the Rindler
spacetime, using functional analytic techniques. In the two dimensional setting, we construct both ground
and thermal states, while in four dimensions we obtain new quantum states.

Derived categories of cubic fourfolds and non-commutative K3 surfaces
The derived category of coherent sheaves on a cubic fourfold has a subcategory which can be thought as
the derived category of a non-commutative K3 surface. This subcategory was studied recently in the work
of Kuznetsov and Addington-Thomas, among others. In this talk, I will present joint work in progress with
Bayer, Lahoz, Stellari and partially with Nuer, Perry, on how to construct Bridgeland stability conditions
on this subcategory. This proves a conjecture by Huybrechts, and it allows to start developing the moduli
theory of semistable objects in these categories, in an analogue way as for the classical Mukai theory for
(commutative) K3 surfaces. I will also discuss a few applications of these results.

Competitive division of a mixed manna
A mixed manna contains goods (that everyone likes), bads (that everyone dislikes), as well as
items that are goods to some agents, but bads or satiated to others.
If all items are goods and utility functions are homothetic, concave (and monotone), the Competitive
Equilibrium with Equal Incomes maximizes the Nash product of utilities: hence it is welfarist
(determined utility-wise by the feasible set of profiles), single-valued and easy to compute.
We generalize the Gale-Eisenberg Theorem to a mixed manna. The Competitive division is still welfarist
and related to the product of utilities or disutilities. If the zero utility profile (before any manna)
is Pareto dominated, the competitive profile is unique and still maximizes the product of utilities.
If the zero profile is unfeasible, the competitive profiles are the critical points of the product
of disutilities on the efficiency frontier, and multiplicity is pervasive. In particular the task
of dividing a mixed manna is either good news for everyone, or bad news for everyone.
We refine our results in the practically important case of linear preferences, where the axiomatic
comparison between the division of goods and that of bads is especially sharp. When we divide goods
and the manna improves, everyone weakly benefits under the competitive rule; but no reasonable rule
to divide bads can be similarly Resource Monotonic. Also, the much larger set of Non Envious and
Efficient divisions of bads can be disconnected so that it will admit no continuous selection.

A critical equation with Hardy potential
We discuss existence issues for a Dirichlet problem in bounded domains with polynomial nonlinearites of
critical growth in presence of an Hardy potential. Linear perturbations can produce positive solutions and
we aim to construct sign-changing solutions, shaped as a tower of 'bubbles' centered at zero with
alternating signs. The construction is optimal as a very fine asymptotic analysis shows for radial towers
of 'bubbles'. This is a joint work with N. Ghoussoub, P. Esposito and A. Pistoia.

Singular rational projective curves and finite dimensional algebras
It is well-known that the derived category of coherent sheaves on a projective line is equivalent to the
derived category of representations of the Kronecker quiver. In my talk (based on a joint work with
Yuriy Drozd) I am going to show that the perfect derived category of coherent sheaves of an arbitrary
reduced rational projective curve can be fully faithfully embedded into the derived category of
representations of an appropriate finite dimensional algebra of finite global dimension. In the case
of degenerate elliptic curves of type of Kodaira type In (cycles of projective lines), this
construction leads to a particularly beautiful class of algebras, called gentle. As an application of the
developed theory, I am going to show that the Rouquier dimension of the derived category of coherent
sheaves on a cycle of projective lines is equal to one.

Formalità in algebra, topologia e geometria
algebre associative, commutative, operads..

corrispondente decomposizione in autospazi.
In
Paolo Papi e Pierluigi Moseneder Frajria.
