Hydrodynamic limits, weak solutions and thermodynamics
I will present a way to derive, via hydrodynamic limits, weak solutions to
the 1D isothermal Euler equations in Lagrangian coordinates. This is obtained
from a microscopic anharmonic chain with momentum preserving noise and hyperbolic
scaling. Boundary conditions are added so we can define thermodynamic
transformations between macroscopic equilibrium states: in particular we study the
first and the second law of thermodynamics for the macroscopic system.

Some mathematical aspects of Density Functional Theory
Density functional theory (DFT) is a computational method used in physics, chemistry and
materials science to investigate the electronic structure of many-body systems. Although
DFT is widely used in applied chemistry, some mathematical aspects of this theory are far
to be understood. The idea of this talk is to present an informal introduction to DFT and,
moreover, discuss a connection between a ground state problem for an Electronic
Schrödinger Equation and optimal transport theory with Coulomb costs.

Regularity via duality in convex variational problems
I will present a technique which allows to have a new insight into
very classical regularity results in some nonlinear elliptic PDEs
(think at the Laplacian or the p-Laplacian operator, for instance) or
in the corresponding variational problems, by estimating the norm of
an increment in terms of a duality gap. Nothing new, but an
interesting point of view which obtains Sobolev estimates without
using the equation, but only convex duality. The technique originates
from fluid mechanics, where Yann Brenier used it to prove difficult BV
estimates on the pressure in the incompressible Euler equation. In
that case more standard PDE methods were not available. Then, we used
the same tools (in collaboration with Cardaliaguet and Meszaros) in
the framework of Mean Field Games with density constraints and then
with Prosinski for less degenerate Mean Field Games. We can say that
the technique has been created to handle situations where the equation
was not available in a suitable sense, and only later it was realized
that it actually works also for more classical cases. These cases,
easier to explain, will be main objects of the talk, even if I will
try to give some ideas of how the same has been applied to the
incompressible Euler equation.

Space-time Trefftz methods for the scalar wave equation
In this talk we investigate the use of Trefftz methods for the numerical discretization
of wave propagation problems in the time-domain. Trefftz methods instead of usual local
polynomial approximation spaces, make use of approximation spaces containing locally
exact solutions to the differential equation. Recently a number of space-time
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods have been developed for acoustic and electromagnetic
waves. We present a Trefftz interior penalty dG method for the acoustic wave equation
in the second order form. Full stability and convergence analysis for this formulation
is available which we brifely present here. We further discuss in this talk the
possibility of extending Trefftz methods to more general wave equations.
The talk concludes with a set of numerical experiments in one- and two-spatial dimensions.

Static large deviations for a reaction-diffusion model
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up
in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary
conditions. We prove the large deviations principle for the empirical measure under
the stationary state. We deduce from this result that the stationary state is
concentrated on the stationary solutions of the hydrodynamic equation which are stable.

Exciton-polaritons propagation in quantum confined superstructures
In quel periodo,
(in particolare crystalli fotonici risonanti).

Almost global existence of space periodic gravity-capillary water waves
The goal of this talk is to prove that any solution of the Cauchy problem for the
capillarity-gravity water waves equations, in one space dimension, with periodic,
even in space, initial data of small size, is almost globally defined in time on
Sobolev spaces, as soon as the initial data are smooth enough, and the
gravity-capillarity parameters are taken outside an exceptional subset of zero measure.

Inverse mean curvature flow in complex hyperbolic space
We consider the evolution by inverse mean curvature flow of a closed, mean
convex and star-shaped hypersurface in the complex hyperbolic space. We
prove that the flow is defined for any positive time, the evolving
hypersurface stays star-shaped and mean convex. Moreover the induced
metric converges, after rescaling, to a conformal multiple of the standard
sub-Riemannian metric on the sphere. Finally we show that there exists a
family of examples such that the Webster curvature of this sub-Riemannian
limit is not constant.

Modelling galaxy formation and evolution in a hierarchical
context - successes and open problems
In the past decades, different approaches have been developed to link the
physical properties of galaxies to the dark matter haloes in which they
reside. In this talk, I will give an overview of methods, aims, and limits
of these techniques, with particular emphasis on semi analytic models of
galaxy formation. For these, I will provide a critical summary of recent
successes, open problems, and future perspectives.

Meccanismi della geodinamica e terremoti
The mechanisms governing plate motion are still unsolved. Bottom
up or top down thermal Rayleigh-Benard convection models are usually
assumed to drive geodynamics. However, there are a several inconsistencies,
and plate boundaries show a systematic asymmetry that appears to be
controlled by Earth's rotation and tidal drag. Seismicity is concentrated
in the shallow crust and at plate boundaries. It decreases toward polar
areas indicating an astronomical tuning in its development. The usual
assumption is that earthquakes nucleate when the static friction over a
surface is overtaken by the differential stress generated by elastic
energy. This model also suggests regularity in earthquake occurrence, that
is the basis for the seismic hazard maps based on the probabilistic
approach. In reality we see that the bit of earthquakes is much more random
and the recurrence time may be an elusive concept. Unlike the standard
seismological models that suggest the dimension of the fault plane is the
controlling factor, the earthquake magnitude is rather determined by the
involved volume and the type of dissipating energy. In contractional areas,
in the hangingwall above a thrust, an over-pressured volume will store
elastic energy during the interseismic period. When the elastic energy will
override the frictional resistance and the opposite gravitational load, the
hangingwall will rebound elastically (elastoquake). On the other hand,
crustal normal fault-related earthquakes dissipate gravitational potential
energy (graviquakes) and their magnitude increases with the involved volume
(delimited by the seismogenic fault and an antithetic dilated wedge in its
hangingwall), and the fault dip. The magnitude increases with the deepening
of the brittle-ductile transition (BDT), which in turn enlarges the
involved volume. Since the energy is mostly gravitational and the
earthquakes are graviquakes, there are a number of seismic precursors that
may be of different sign to those associated to elastoquakes. This may be
the reason why reliable precursors have not been recognized so
far. Therefore, we know a number of parameters that control the magnitude
of graviquakes and elastoquakes and we can start to calculate their
potential maximum magnitude in the different regions in Italy and
elsewhere. With this technique we may construct maps that are not biased by
the gaps and limitation of seismic catalogues used for probabilistic
inferences of the seismic hazard.

Scaling properties of three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensed gases
The behavior of three-dimensional bosonic gases at low temperatures is characterized
by the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a macroscopic occupation of a
single-particle state. I will describe some universal scaling properties of bosonic
gases in the BEC phase. I will focus on the phase-coherence properties, illustrating
the crossover from the 3D behavior to the effective 1D behavior of very elongated
systems, and on the critical behavior arising at the spatial boundary of an
inhomogeneous system. Universal predictions are confirmed by quantum Monte Carlo
simulations of the 3D Bose-Hubbard model, a realistic model of bosonic atoms in
optical lattices.

I will discuss the relation between the existence of symmetric tensors with
coefficients on smooth subvarieties in a projective space with the properties of its
