A study in random dynamical systems with application to stochastic resonance
We study the stochastic resonance from the point of view of dynamical systems, in the framework of random dynamical systems with a nonautonomous deterministic term. We prove the existence and uniqueness of an attracting random periodic orbit for a class of one-dimensional random dynamical systems with time-periodic forcing; in the case of the stochastic resonance, we use properties of the attractor to define an indicator for the resonant regime.

Large Eddy Simulation Reduced Order Models
This talk proposes several large eddy simulation reduced order models (LES-ROMs) based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). To develop these models, explicit POD spatial filtering is introduced. Two types of spatial filters are considered: A POD projection onto a POD subspace and a POD differential filter. These explicit POD spatial filters allow the development of two types of ROM closure models: phenomenological and approximate deconvolution. Furthermore, the explicit POD spatial filters are used to develop regularized ROMs in which various ROM terms are smoothed (regularized). The new LES-ROMs are tested in the numerical simulation of a three-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder. Although the talk will outline some of our research group's accomplishments, it will also serve as a friendly introduction to the world of reduced order modeling. Graduate students in mathematics and engineering are especially encouraged to attend.

Stabilità linearizzata per soluzioni positive per problemi parabolici degeneri e singolari.
We study some linear eigenvalue problems with singular coefficients on bounded domains. This extends previous work by Bertsch and Rostamian (working in weighted Sobolev spaces) and Hernandez, Mancebo and Vega (in Hölder continuous function spaces) to some problems not included in both. Our results are obtained working again in weighted Sobolev spaces. We give applications to linearized stability for positive solutions to degenerate and singular nonlinear parabolic problems. This is joint work with J.I. Diaz.

Geometry and syzygies of algebraic curves
It is a classical theorem that if X is a Riemann surface of genus g, and if X is embedded in projective space in a sufficiently positive manner, then X is cut out by equations of degree 2. Mark Green realized in the early 1980s that one should see this as the first case of a more general picture involving higher syzygies. Around that time, he and I conjectured that one should be able to read off the 'gonality' of X -i.e. the least degree with which X can be expressed as a branched covering of the sphere- from the resolution of the homogeneous ideal of X with respect to any one sufficiently positive embedding. A couple of years ago Lawrence Ein and I recently noticed that this gonality conjecture in fact follows very simply from a small variant of ideas introduced by Voisin, involving vector bundles on the symmetric product of X. In this talk aimed at non specialists, I will survey this circle of ideas.
