Models of discrete thin films
We discuss some results on dimension-reduction for discrete thin films, where
the thickness is expressed as the number of discrete layers. The discrete framework
amplifies the surface effects, resulting in a non-trivial dependence on the number
of layers, and allows to treat models of quasicrystals or aperiodic lattices
(e.g. Penrose lattice). We focus particularly on surface energies, with some results
also in the random case and for antiferromagnetic spin systems.

Comparison principles for admissible viscosity solutions of elliptic branches
of fully nonlinear PDE
We will describe a recent approach to treating the validity of comparison principles
for weak solutions of scalar second order PDE of the form F(x,u(x),Hu(x)) = 0
under non standard structural conditions on F. In particular, F(x,r,A)
need not be globally monotone in r and A. One exploits Krylov's notion
[Trans A.M.S. 1995] of elliptic branches to replace the PDE with a differential inclusion
involving a certain set-valued map. A natural notion of admissibile viscosity solution
for the differential inclusion can be captured in terms of subaffine functions and the
notion of duality of Harvey and Lawson [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 2009]. We will
discuss these notions and show how to determine structural conditions on F
which ensure that the associated set-valued map is sufficiently regular to yield the
desired comparison principle.
This is a joint work with Marco Cirant (Università di Milano).

Bose Particles in a Box: Convergent Expansion of the Ground State in the
Mean Field Limiting Regime, I
I shall report on a novel multi-scale technique to study many-body quantum systems
where the total number of particles is fixed. The method is based on Feshbach map and the
scales are represented by occupation numbers of particle states. For strong interaction
potentials, I will derive a convergent expansion of the ground state of an interacting Bose gas
in a finite box and in the mean field limiting regime.

Adverse Selection in Secondary Insurance Markets: Evidence from the Life
Settlement Market
We use data from a large US life expectancy provider to test for asymmetric information
in the secondary life insurance -or life settlement- market. We compare realized lifetimes
for a sub-sample of settled policies relative to the entire sample, and we find a
significant difference indicating the existence of informational differences between
policyholders and life settlement companies. We further show that the informational
advantage is temporary and wears off over approximately seven years. We argue this is
in line with adverse selection on an individual's survival prospects, which has economic
consequences for the life settlement market and beyond.

Convergence of the solutions of the discounted H-J equation
We consider a continuous coercive Hamiltonian on the cotangent bundle of
the compact connected manifold M which is convex in the momentum. We
prove that the viscosity solutions uλ:M→R
of the critical Hamilton-Jacobi equation with discount factor λ
positive converge uniformly, as λ goes to 0, to a specific solution
u0 of the limit equation.
We characterize u0 in terms of Peierls barrier
and projected Mather measures. As a corollary, we infer that the ergodic
approximation, as introduced by Lions, Papanicolaou and Varadhan in 1987
in their seminal paper on periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi
equations, selects a specific corrector in the limit. The talk is based on
a joint work with A. Fathi, R. Iturriaga and M. Zavidovique that will
appear on Inventiones Mathematicae.

Perturbations methods in the study of non-equilibrium thermodynamics
The non-equilibrium thermodynamics of a gas inside a piston is a conceptually simple
problem where analytic results are rare. For example, it is hard to find in the literature
analytic formulas that describe the heat exchanged with the reservoir when the system either
relaxes to equilibrium or is compressed over a finite time. In this talk we derive such kind of
analytic formulas. To achieve this result, we take the equations derived by Cerino et al.
[Phys. Rev. E 91, 032128] describing the dynamic evolution of a gas-piston system, we
cast them in a dimensionless form and we solve the dimensionless equations with the
aid multiple scales expansion method and regular expansion techniques.
With the approximated solutions we obtained, we express in a closed form the heat
exchanged by the gas-piston system with the reservoir for a large class of relevant
non-equilibrium situations.

Twisted generalized cohomology theories and applications
Twists for various cohomology theories play an important role in
various areas of mathematics as well as in mathematical physics. I will survey
this area, starting with twisted de Rham cohomology, twisted K-theory, and then
considering higher twists from the point of view of generalized cohomology theories
of higher chromatic and categorical levels. I will describe joint work with Craig
Westerland on twists of Morava K-theory and E-theory, descending from complex
cobordism, at all chromatic levels. Then I will describe recent work with John Lind
and Craig Westerland on a new periodic form of the iterated algebraic K-theory
of connective complex K-theory ku, generalizing the K-theory of 2-vector bundles
K(ku) to all categorical degrees, as well as a natural twisting of this cohomology
theory by higher gerbes. As an application, this leads to topological T-duality for
sphere bundles oriented with respect to this theory as an isomorphism of the
twisted theories, generalizing various existing results.

Proiezione in enigma: costrutto prospettico e impianto simbolico in Las
Meninas di Diego Velazquez
Diversi fattori contribuiscono all'enigmatico fascino di Las Meninas, capolavoro pittorico
complesso messaggio simbolico in esso contenuto, in linea col comprovato e profondo
grafici, me modelli aquette originali, l'assetto geometrico della scena rappresentata,

The Wishart distribution which never was
Replacing the integer parameter in the family of chi square distributions by a continuous parameter
leads to the family of the gamma distributions. A similar phenomena occurs with the non central
chi square. What happens in higher dimensions, where the natural extension of the chi square
family is the Wishart family? The extension to a continuous parameter is clarified by the Gyndikin
theorem (1975), with a beautiful short proof by Shanbhag (1989). The case of the non central
Wishart is really difficult, and its explicit solution has been conjectured by E. Mayerhoffer (2010).
We prove this conjecture by a detailed analysis of the zonal polynomials of symmetric matrices
and of the convolution of measures concentrated on singular semi positive matrices
(Joint work with H. Massam).

Infinite dimensional calculus via regularization with financial motivations, an
infinite dimensional PDE and some stability results
This talk develops some recent results on result for path dependent PDE. In order to solve
this problem some aspects of stochastic calculus via regularization to Banach valued processes
will be recalled. An original concept of chi-quadratic variation is introduced, where chi is
a subspace of the dual of a tensor product B with itself, where B is the values
space of the process. Particular interest is devoted to the case when B is the space of
real continuous functions defined on [-T,0], T>0.
Ito formulae and stability of finite-quadratic variation processes are established.
Attention is devoted to a finite real quadratic variation (for instance Dirichlet, weak Dirichlet)
process X. The C([-T; 0])-valued process X defined by values of process X with its past.
A representation result will be strictly linked to a function u:[0,T]⊕C([-T,0])→R
solving an infinite dimensional path dependent partial differential equation with some
explicit formula for a decomposition result of type Clark-Ocone formula which
is true when X is the standard Brownian motion W. The financial perspective of this
work is related to hedging theory of path dependent options without semimartingales.
