riguardanti funzioni superarmoniche e potenziali di misure di Radon
positive.
I risultati che verranno presentati sono stati ottenuti recentemente
in collaborazione con Gabriele Grillo e Matteo Muratori.

A (bittersweet) topological data analysis aperitif
In recent years the statistical analysis of topological signatures
computable from a possibly high-dimensional point cloud has attracted
increasing attention from a theoretical as well as applied point of
view. In this talk I will informally review the basic techniques and
main inferential results available in the TDA toolkit showing them in
action (...with their pros-&-cons...) on two classification problems
related to activity tracking tasks (joint with Tullia Padellini).

Anisotropic semipositone quasilinear problems
We present existence of positive solutions for a boundary degenerate
(or singular) quasilinear equation in a ball or in the entire space
RN. We consider as differential operator a weighted
p-Laplacian with a continuous coefficient satisfying a mild integrability
condition towards the boundary of the ball or at infinity in RN.
Our main result applies when the nonlinearities f(u) have (p-1)-sublinear
growth at infinity and singular semipositone structure at the origin

Minimal Graphs in Heisenberg Space
I will talk about the existence and the non existence of minimal
graphs in Heisenberg space, with a given boundary. Moreover height

Geosystemics as a Systemic View of the Earth's Magnetic
Field: clues for an Imminent Geomagnetic Transition
Geosystemics studies the Earth in its wholeness to look for eventual
couplings among the subsystems composing our planet, and investigates
whether the process of concern persists in its typical (present) state
or is approaching a dynamical change. This presentation will provide
this view for the Earth's magnetic field, reviewing most of the
results obtained in our recent works.
The main tools used by geosystemics are some nonlinear quantities,
such as some kinds of entropy. Through them, it is possible to:
(a) establish the chaoticity and ergodicity of the recent geomagnetic
field in a direct and simple way; and (b) indentify the most
extreme events in its history, as the most rapid and the slowest
ones, i.e., jerks and polarity changes (reversals or excursions).
In particular, regarding the latter phenomena, with the help
of these entropic concepts and together with the use of the
theory of critical transitions, some clues can be given for a
possible imminent change of the geomagnetic field dynamical regime.

Data management with Statistics. Stop messing with the data!
Data fusion is a major task in data integration. Frequently, different sources
store data about the same real-world entities, however with conflicts in the
values of their features. Data fusion aims at solving those conflicts in order
to obtain a unique global view over those sources. Some solutions to the problem
have been proposed in the database literature, yet they have a number of
limitations for real cases: for example they leave too many alternatives
to users or produce biased results. This paper proposes a novel algorithm
for data fusion that uses the probabilistic dependencies among the features
to actually solve the conflicts, overcoming the limitations of the existing
approaches.

Volume of compact Clifford-Klein forms
A compact Clifford-Klein form of a homogeneous space
G/H is a quotient of this homogeneous space by a
discrete subgroup Γ of G acting properly discontinuously
and cocompactly on G/H. When both G and H are semi-simple
groups, the action of G on G/H preserves a pseudo-Riemannian
metric, and in particular a volume form.
I will prove that the volume of the compact Clifford-Klein
form Γ\G/H is the integral over a certain 'fundamental
class' of Γ of some G-invariant form ω_H on the
Riemannian symmetric space G/K. As a consequence, one obtains
in many cases that this volume is rigid. Moreover, this
provides a new obstruction to the existence of compact
Clifford-Klein forms of certain homogeneous spaces.

Existence of H-surfaces in cones and their representation
as radial graphs
In this talk we show some recent results concerning the Plateau
problem for disc-type surfaces with prescribed mean curvature H,
spanning a given Jordan curve and contained in a convex cone.
Under some growth condition on H we prove existence of a solution X
characterized as minimizer of the energy associated to the problem.
Moreover, under a suitable monotonicity assumption on H, we show that
if the Jordan curve has injective radial projection on the
unit sphere, then X is the radial graph of a mapping on the interior
domain of the unit sphere bounded by the radial projection of
the curve. These results are contained in a joint work with Paolo
Caldiroli (Università di Torino) [see arXiv:1512.03789].

Make a seismograph with your GPS: from the academic
idea to the industrial product
The Global Positioning System, shortened in the acronym GPS,
is a quite familiar tool, more or less secretly working into
our car navigators and smartphones/tablets, and continuously
used together with a cartographic information in order to find
and move to places of our interest.
GPS and cartography, which are now pervading our life, give us
the opportunity to taste a discipline traditionally called Geodesy,
as ancient as the famous Alessandria Library, continuously renovated
over centuries and dramatically boosted again in the era of the
artificial satellites, and now being the noble root of a new discipline
called Geomatics. GPS plays a central role in science and technology
too, and now it can supply valuable information for civil protection
against a number of natural hazards, including tsunamis.
In this respect, the Positioning Group at the Geodesy and Geomatics
Division faced a scientific and technological challenge launched in
2007, in the frame of a long scientific debate started after the
great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake (December 26, 2004,
Magnitude 9.1), and invented an algorithm called VADASE, nationally
and internationally patented by Sapienza.
VADASE transforms GPS in a seismograph, contributing to evaluate,
in real-time and in 3D, the ground shaking style induced by an
earthquake, crucial to understand if a devastating tsunami can
be generated.
Recently (September 2, 2015) VADASE became an industrial product,
after a long cooperation and a formal agreement between Sapienza
and Leica Geosystems AG, a Swiss company worldwide leader in
Geomatics and GPS manufacturing. The aim of the speech is just
to recall VADASE story, out of technicalities, and to draw future
research and technology transfer prospects.
