Spectral theory of quasi-periodic Schrodinger operators via KAM
I will talk about our recent works on Dry Ten Martini Problem (all gaps of
almost Mathieu operators are open) and Jitomirskaya's conjecture on the phase
transition of almost Mathieu operators. The main ingredient of the proof is KAM
theory. The talk is based on joint works with Artur Avila and Qi Zhou.

The Toda system on compact surfaces
We consider a Toda system, namely a coupled system of singular Liouville equations
defined on acompact surface, which is motivated by the study of models in non-abelian
Chern-Simons theory. We will present the known results and a general existence result
based on variational methods and Moser-Trudinger inequalities. This is a joint work
with L. Battaglia, A. Malchiodi and D. Ruiz.

Time evolution for a Schroedinger equation with point interactions
In this talk we will review the construction of Schroedinger operators
with point interactions and in particular we will focus on the in two
dimensional case. In the case of a constant strength of the point
interactions, we will give an alternative description of the solution
to the Schroedinger equation in terms of the so called 'charge
equation'. We will generalize this model to the case of time-dependent point
interactions and a nonlinear point interaction and we will discuss
some preliminary results about the ionization of a model atom.

Exact solution for rain-water flows and numerical simulation of surface runoff
We are interested in modeling and simulating surface runoff in urban areas during extreme
rainfall events. We propose an extended Saint-Venant system which incorporates an additional
rain term on the surface of the water with wind effects and infiltration of the water into
the ground below. This model is based on the depth-averaged thin layer approximation of
shallow water flows over non flat 'beds' and furthermore takes into account a possibly
variable friction law depending on the soil material. We then propose an exact solution
of the Riemann problem in a topography-rain linked coordinate system for all the possible
Riemann problems. Next, we propose several numerical experiments that we compare to the
kinetic scheme with reflections.

Syzygies and the Green-Lazarsfeld Secant Conjecture coefficients
Generalizing the well-known Green Conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves, Green
and Lazarsfeld formulated in 1986 the Secant Conjecture predicting that a line bundle
L of sufficiently high degree on a curve has a non-linear p-syzygy if and only if L
fails to be (p+1)-very ample. Via lattice theory for special K3 surfaces, Voisin's
solution of the classical Green Conjecture and calculations on moduli stacks of
pointed curves, we prove: (1) The Green-Lazarsfeld Secant Conjecture in various
degree of generality, including its strongest possible form in the divisorial
case in the universal Jacobian. (2) The Prym-Green Conjecture on the naturality
of the resolution of a general Prym-canonical curve of odd genus.

Compactified universal Jacobian and the double ramification cycle
On the moduli space of projective smooth n-marked genus g curves, the double ramification
cycle is the codimension g cycle corresponding to curves admitting a principal divisor of
a given form. The Eliashberg problem is about finding a geometrical meaningful extension
of the double ramification cycle to the moduli space of stable curves, together with an
explicit expression of it in terms of tautological cycles. After going through known
results and approaches to the Eliashberg problem, we will show how to use the compactified
universal Jacobian in the sense of Margarida Melo to build up a strategy extending known
results up so far.

Multi scale and multi omic approaches in systems medicine
I will first introduce my current research on multi omics and multi
scale modeling. Ductal carcinoma is one of the most common cancers
among women, and the main cause of death is the formation of
metastases. Through a branching process model, I describe the relation
between the survival times and the drivers mutations mainly involved
in metastatic breast cancer. In particular, the model takes into
account intracell to tissues dynamics in breast, blood and bone
compartments and uses the gene expression profile of circulating
tumour cells to predict personalised survival probability. I will end
by introducing current work on logic approaches.

Use and misuse of mathematics in economic theory
In recent decades the role of mathematics in then analysis of economic and financial
phenomena has greatly increased. Unfortunately, the effects of such a process have not
always been positive: mathematics has been used to give to some economic theories the
appearance of 'objective truths' hiding the fact that they actually stem from the ideological
assumptions of their authors, or, even worse, to cover serious methodological mistakes.
This has often lead to ridiculous and grotesque results by economists claiming to be able
to predict human behaviour.
I will illustrate my thesis with examples taken from works and articles in Game Theory and
General Equilibrium Theory and present what, in my opinion, could be useful application of
mathematical techniques in several fields such as linguistic games, politics and the
analysis of exploitation.
