Morse-Sard type theorems for Sobolev mappings
The Morse-Sard theorem, and the generalizations by Dubovitskii and Federer, have numerous applications and belong to the core results of multivariate calculus for smooth mappings. In this talk we discuss extensions of these results to suitable classes of Sobolev mappings. The potential lack of differentiability of these mappings warrants new interpretations, and requires one to prove that the Sobolev mappings enjoy Luzin N type properties with respect to lower dimensional Hausdorff contents. The talk is based on joint work with Jean Bourgain (Princeton) and Mikhail Korobkov (Novosibirsk).

Variational methods for photometric 3D-reconstruction
Energy minimization methods have been shown to be particularly effective for solving a wide class of inverse problems in computer vision and image processing. Variational methods are energy minimization methods which are at the interface between several mathematical concepts: PDEs, calculus of variations, statistics and optimization. In this talk, we revisit the so-called photometric stereo problem, which is an extension of the 'shape-from-shading' problem using several images, under a variational approach. In particular, we discuss the choice of an appropriate model (L2 vs L1 data term, Sobolev vs TV regularization, etc.) and efficient numerics based on augmented Lagrangian and splitting methods (ADMM, split-Bregman schemes, etc.) for performing the minimization. As an application of the variational approach to photometric stereo, 3D-reconstruction results on real-world data are presented.

How superaddittive can a risk measure be?
Risk measures that are not subadditive may penalize the aggregation of risk, by inducing portfolio requirements that are larger than those of undiversified positions. This happens for instance for Value-at-Risk (VaR), as well as convex shortfall risk measures. In this paper we characterize the potential for superadditivity that any risk measure may exhibit, considering both dependence uncertainty as well as the effect of portfolio size. It is shown that for the wide majority of risk measures of use or interest this corresponds to calculating the smallest dominating coherent risk measure (SDCRM). We show that this risk measure often exists and is identified with the notion of extreme-aggregation risk measure introduced in this paper. Explicit results are provided for the class of distortion risk measures, where the SDCRM is again a distortion risk measure and for the class of shortfall risk measures, where the SDCRM is given by an expectile.

The closure of the loci of meromorphic differentials with prescribed zeroes and poles
In the total space of the Hodge bundle of stable differentials over the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves with marked points, we describe precisely the closure of the locus of differentials with prescribed multiplicities of zeroes and poles at these points. Our focus will be on necessary and sufficient conditions for a stable curve to lie in this closure. Based on joint work with M. Bainbridge, D. Chen, Q. Gendron, and M. Moeller.

Geometric degenerations of cubic threefolds and their intermediate Jacobians
We show that the map associating to a smooth cubic threefold its intermediate Jacobian extends to a morphism from the wonderful compactification of the moduli space of cubic threefolds to a toroidal compactification of the moduli of abelian fivefolds. In this talk we will focus on using this to describe geometrically various degenerations of cubic threefolds and intermediate Jacobians. Based on joint work with S. Casalaina Martin, K. Hulek, and R. Laza.
