Non-topological condensates for the self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model
We discuss vortex configurations in the abelian self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model, where topological invariants can just describe a part of the picture. We construct non-topological condensates (=doubly periodic vortex-configurations) towards a deeper understanding of the periodic setting. Joint work with M. del Pino, M. Musso and P. Figueroa.

Hamilton Jacobi equations on graphs and applications
We introduce a notion of gradient and an infimal-convolution operator that extend properties of solutions of Hamilton Jacobi equations to more general spaces, in particular to graphs. As a main application, the hypercontractivity of this class of in infimal-convolution operators is connected to some discrete version of the log-Sobolev inequality and to a discrete version of Talagrand's transport inequality.

Min-max methods in Geometry
Min-max methods were first introduced in Geometry by Birkhoff 100 years ago. In recent years, they have been used to solve several long standing open questions. I will survey those results and mention some new progress in the theory.

Collision avoidance in pedestrian dynamics
Experiments indicate that one of the main forces in pedestrian dynamics is collision avoidance. In other words individuals actively anticipate the future to predict a possible collision time and adjust their velocity accordingly. At the same time they show no intention to change their direction when walking close to each other in the same direction. This collision avoidance behavior plays a major role in pedestrian dynamics, which was already illustrated in numerical simulations. The simulations show that already a simple dynamical systems model, with forces depending on the estimated hitting time reproduce complex dynamics such as velocity alignment. In this talk we propose a different model, motivated from optimal control theory, which is based on a simple two-player pursuer evader game. We shall use Bellman's approach to study the embedded multi-player game for collision avoidance and discuss related theoretical as well as numerical aspects. Joint work with Marie-Therese Wolfram.

Freezing of energy of a soliton in an external potential
We study the dynamics of a soliton in the generalized NLS with a small external potential εV of Schwartz class. We prove that there exists an effective mechanical system describing the dynamics of the soliton and that, for any positive integer r, the energy of such a mechanical system is almost conserved up to times of order ε-r. In the rotational invariant case we deduce that the true orbit of the soliton remains close to the mechanical one up to times of order ε-r.

Von Neumann algebra valued differential operators over non-compact manifolds
We provide criteria for self-adjointness and τ-Fredholmness of first and second order differential operators acting on sections of infinite dimensional bundles, whose fibers are modules of finite type over a von Neumann algebra A endowed with a trace τ. We extend the Callias-type index to operators acting on sections of such bundles and show that this index is stable under compact perturbations. Joint work with Maxim Braverman.

Instantons in Field and String Theory
I will present a general introduction to instantons in gauge theories and discuss their relevance and their main properties. I will also describe how these non-perturbative field configurations can be embedded in string theory and show how this stringy description provides a unifying description and suggests interesting generalizations, also with possible phenomenological applications. Scaling properties of a Brownian porous medium
The path of a Brownian motion on a d-dimensional torus run up to time t is a random compact subset of the torus. In this talk we look at the geometric and spectral properties of the complement C(t) of this set when t tends to infinity. Questions we address are the following:
1. What is the linear size of the largest region in C(t)?
2. What does C(t) look like around this region?
3. Does C(t) have some sort of 'component-structure'?
4. What are the largest capacity, largest volume and smallest principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of the 'components' of C(t)?
We discuss both d≥3 and d=2, which turn out to be very different. Joint work with Michiel van den Berg (Bristol), Erwin Bolthausen (Zurich) and Jesse Goodman (Auckland).

Explicit estimates on the torus for the sup-norm and the dissipative length scale of solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Equation
In this talk we have obtained explicit and accurate estimates of the sup-norm for solutions of the Navier-Stokes Equations (NSE) in two space dimensions. By using the best (so far) available estimates of the embedding constants which appear in the classical functional interpolation inequalities used in the study of solutions of dissipative partial differential equations, we have evaluated in an explicit manner the values of the sup-norm of the solutions of the NSE. In addition we have calculated the so-called time-averaged dissipative length scale associated to the above solutions.

Universality for bootstrap percolation in two dimensions
In the classical r-neighbour bootstrap percolation model on a graph G, vertices are initially infected independently at random with probability p, and subsequently vertices become infected as soon as they have at least r already-infected neighbours. In this talk we will discuss a vast generalization of this model on the lattice Zd, which was introduced recently by Bollobas, Smith and Uzzell. Somewhat surprisingly, it turns out that in two dimensions there are only a small number of possible behaviours. We will discuss what is known so far, and the many open questions in higher dimensions. This is joint work with Bela Bollobas, Hugo Duminil-Copin and Paul Smith.
