In sales districting, the task is to assign a given set of (prospective) customer accounts, each
with a fixed market potential, to the individual members of the sales force such that each customer
has a unique representative and each sales person faces equitable workload and has an equal income
opportunity in terms of incentive pay, i.e., the districts should be balanced. Two other important
planning criteria in sales districting are travel distances and clearly defined geographic areas of
responsibility. The latter criterion is desired to avoid competition among the sales force and is
typically termed as contiguity. Concerning travel distances, if a sales person visits each customer
every day, then the travel time is proportional to the length of a TSP tour. However, the workload
of districts is usually balanced over 2-4 weeks and some customers may have to be visited only once
during this time whereas others require weekly service. Moreover, customers may have time windows,
tours may include overnight stays, and so on, which makes the actual computation of the travel times
impossible for large problems instances. Therefore, districting uses the concept of compactness as a
proxy for travel distances. A district is said to be geographically compact if it is round-shaped
and undistorted. The hope is that compact districts result in smaller travel times on a day-to-day
basis than non-compact districts. A similar setting is encountered in service districting. In sales
and service districting, customers are predominantly represented as points and although there exists
a large body of literature, there is no consensus on a common compactness measure or suitable
approaches to model contiguity of point sets. For example, all compactness measures are based on
distances either between the center of a district and its basic units or between pairs of basic
units of the same district. But even if they follow the same idea, the resulting districts may look
considerably different. In this talk, we want to give an overview of different approaches to measure
compactness and assess contiguity, and discuss their strengths and weaknesses when applied to
practical problems. Moreover, we present a mathematical formulation to solve the districting problem
optimally as well as an efficient geometric algorithm that is capable of coping with large practical
problems.

Steiner symmetrization is a very useful tool in the study of isoperimetric inequality. This is also
due to the fact that the perimeter of a set is less or equal than the perimeter of its Steiner
symmetral. In the same way, in the Gaussian setting, it is well known that Ehrhard symmetrization
does not increase the Gaussian perimeter. We will show characterization results for equality cases
in both Steiner and Ehrhard perimeter inequalities. We will also characterize rigidity of equality
cases. By rigidity, we mean the situation when all equality cases are trivially obtained by a
translation of the Steiner symmetral (or, in the Gaussian setting, by a reflection of the Ehrhard
symmetral). We will achieve this through the introduction of a suitable measure-theoretic notion of
connectedness, and through a fine analysis of the barycenter function for a special class of sets.
These results are obtained in collaboration with Maria Colombo, Guido De Philippis, and Francesco
Maggi.

We will define enriched structures on tropical curves, in analogy with the usual definition for
nodal curves introduced by Mainò, and we will construct a parameter space for these objects. As an
application, we will give a toric description of the scheme parametrizing enriched structures on a
fixed nodal curve.

A classical result in birational geometry, Morìs Cone Theorem, implies that if the canonical
bundle of a variety X is not nef then X contains rational curves. This is the starting point of the
so-called Minimal Model Program. In particular, hyperbolic varieties are positive, from the point of
view of birational geometry. Very much in the same vein, one could ask what happens for a quasi
projective variety, Y. Using resolution of singularity, then one is lead to consider pairs (X, D) of
a variety and a divisor, such that Y=Xsetminus D. I will show how to obtain a theorem analogous to
Morìs Cone Theorem in this context. I will also discuss an ampleness criterion for hyperbolic
pairs.

We use the Foldy- Wouthuysen unitary transformation to transform the Dirac equations into an
elliptic problem in the 4-dim half space with Neumann boundary condition. Then we give an
alternative min-max characterization of the eigenvalues problem for the Brown Ravenhall one electron
atoms Hamiltonian.

We investigate ground state configurations for atomic potentials including both two- and three-body
nearest-neighbor interaction terms. The aim is to prove that such potentials may describe
crystallization in different lattice geometries, such as the typical hexagonal periodicity of carbon
nanostructures. We give conditions in order to prove that planar energy minimizers are periodic and
to quantify the lower-order surface energy contribution. We discuss the optimality of ground states
in terms of discrete isoperimetric inequalities and we study their aspect ratio as the number of
particles grows. Finally, by recasting the minimization problem in three-space dimensions, we remark
some properties about the geometry of carbon rolled up structures and fullerenes. (Joint works with

modificando solo alcuni parametri.
Vedremo come l'approssimazione numerica semi-Lagrangiana

In particolare ho scelto, come insieme

Double affine Hecke algebras and their degenerate versions have been an active area of study since
their original definition in 1993, when they were used by Ivan Cherednik to solve Macdonald
conjectures. When studying their representation theory, one usually focuses on Category O. Here one
defines Verma modules M as certain induced modules, shows that with appropriate assumptions these
modules always have an irreducible quotient L=M/K, and that all irreducible modules in Category O
can be uniquely realized in this way as quotients of Verma modules. However, the description of this
maximal submodule K, and consequently of the irreducible module L, are not known in general. This is
why alternative characterizations of irreducible modules are interesting. In this talk, I will focus
on the question Can irreducible Category O modules for degenerate double affine Hecke algebras
of type A always be realized as submodules of Verma modules?" The corresponding answer for
affine Hecke algebras, as discovered by Guzzi, Nazarov and Papi, is always yes. The answer for
double affine Hecke algebras is more involved. I will describe both the modules which do not allow
such a realization and the imbedding of the modules which do allow it in terms of the combinatorics
of the affine symmetric group and periodic skew Young diagrams.
