Derivation of the semiclassical Schroedinger equation from QED
It is well known, that the interaction of a charge with photons that are in a coherent state can in good approximation be described classically. Of course a coherent state is only an idealization. But in which sense are the photons which are naturally created by a system of many charges close to a coherent state? And is this sense sufficient to explain classical behaviour? In the talk I will give an answer to these questions. I will discuss the solutions of the Pauli-Fierz equation, starting with a condensate of charges and no photons. I will show that the photons created during time evolution are in fact close to coherent states such that their interaction with another charge can be described semiclassically, i.e. by the Schrödinger equation where the A-field is treated classically. I will also show, that A is a solution of Maxwell's equations.

On the trimmed mean in Hilbert spaces: applications to fuzzy and functional data
Numerous experimental studies involve semi-quantitative expert information, or measured in a non-precise way, which can be modeled with interval (fluctuations, grouped data, etc.) or fuzzy (ratings, opinions, perceptions etc.) data. A general framework to analyze these kinds of inexact data with statistical tools developed for Hilbertian random variables will be presented. Robust estimation in Hilbert spaces is specially relevant for its applications in the treatment of contaminated functional data. Specifically, the trimmed mean was already defined and analyzed under ideal conditions. However its estimation has not been efficiently implemented. An algorithm to compute the sample trimmed mean in Hilbert spaces is presented and its robust properties are briefly discussed. To show the performance of the algorithm some case studies concerning functional and fuzzy data will be presented.

Counterexamples to the Faber conjecture
Faber and Pandharipande formulated a "trinity" of conjectures regarding the tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves. Specifically, they conjectured that there is Poincar'e duality in the tautological ring of the space of n-pointed genus g curves that are either (i) stable, or (ii) of compact type, or (iii) with rational tails. I will explain that there are now two known counterexamples to this conjecture: in the stable case, it fails when g=2 and n > = 20 (this is due to joint work with Orsola Tommasi), and in the compact type case, it fails when g=2 and n > = 8.
