I will present a variational time discretization for the multi-dimensional gas dynamics equations,
in the spirit of minimizing movements for curves of maximal slope. Each timestep requires the
minimization of a functional measuring the acceleration of fluid elements, over the cone of monotone
transport maps. We prove convergence to measure-valued solutions for the pressureless gas dynamics
and the compressible Euler equations. This is a joint work with Marc Sedjro and Michael
Westdickenberg.

The recent literature has introduced models based on nonlocal conservation laws in several space
dimensions, e.g., see [3] for crowd dynamics applications or [1] for sedimentation processes. The
Lax-Friedrichs type numerical algorithm presented in this talk is proved to be converging to the
exact solution. The usual divergence free assumption, see [2], is here abandoned. The key step in
the convergence proof is providing strong BV estimates on the approximate solutions. Numerical
integrations show the convergence rate as well as various qualitative properties of the class of
equations considered.

Mongardi.

In this talk, I will present some new results regarding topological quantum phases of matter, in the
context of time-reversal symmetric (TRS) topological insulators in 2 and 3 dimensions. I will first
review how geometric information can be extracted from periodic gapped quantum systems, modeling
e.g. electrons in crystalline solids. This information is encoded in integer-valued topological
invariants, namely Chern numbers of the so-called Bloch bundle. In 2d systems, the Chern number is
known to measure the obstruction to the existence of a smooth periodic Bloch frame for an isolated
set of energy bands of the Hamiltonian, and is related to physical observables such as the
transverse conductivity in the Quantum Hall Effect. I will then explain how the presence of further
symmetries, such as time-reversal, leads to a "refinement" of the geometry. This is relevant in
the framework of 2d and 3d TRS topological insulators, whose quantum phases are labelled by integers
mod 2 and are distinguished by the presence of edge spin currents. Our result allows to identify
these Z_2-valued invariants again as geometric obstructions. The results were obtained in
collaboration with D. Fiorenza and G. Panati ("La Sapienza" Università di Roma).

In this talk, we try to generalize Sakaìs work on anticanonical models of rational surfaces
to the case of Fano type varieties. More precisely, first we give a characterization of Fano type
varieties using the singularities of anticanonical models. Secondly, we propose a new decomposition
of the anticanonical map (which can be considered as the -K_X-MMP) of Fano type varieties using the
K_X-MMP. This is a joint work with D.Hwang and J.Park.

Dynamical Systems working seminars
In this talk, after a brief survey on linear response formula results, we will focus in some
developments that we have carried out at UFBA. Such developments have implications in the regularity
of Lyapunov exponents, Hausdorff Dimension and Decay and Large Deviations rates of non-uniformly
expanding systems. (Joint work with T. Bomfim and P. Varandas.)
