percettore. Passeremo in rassegna i problemi aperti, i modelli proponibili, e i rilievi sonici,

Consider the arrival process defined by t_i = i + xi_i, where xi_i are i.i.d random variables. First
introduced in the 50's, this point process is of remarkable importance in transportation systems,
where scheduled arrivals are intrinsically subject to random variations; the model has also proved
capable of delivering a good description of actual job arrivals in health care and crane handling
systems. In this talk I will consider a queueing model where the customers arrival time are defined
as above, and the service is delivered by a unique server at deterministic times. Such a queueing
model shows an excellent fit with actual data from the London Heathrow International Airport. In the
case where the delays xi_i are exponentially distributed, the queueing model above is represented by
the code EDA/D/1 in the Kendall's notation. I will describe the EDA/D/1 model as a bivariate Markov
chain and obtain a functional equation for the bivariate generating function of the chain stationary
distribution. Solving that functional equation for the bivariate generating function is a very tough
problem. A possible strategy to solve this problem is to consider a power series approximation in a
parameter related to the standard deviation of the delays. I will first show the solution arising
from the power series approximation, and then discuss its pros and cons.

We present a fully practical residual-based adaptive simulation framework for two-phase flows with
variable densities governed by a Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes model with double obstacle potential.
In addition we consider wall parallel Dirichlet boundary control of the flow part to achieve a
prescribed concentration field. We present a recipe how to construct the underlying controller and
how to achieve his stabilizing properties. Joint work with Christian Kahle.

Manifold calculus is a machinery invented by Goodwillie and Weiss that for any topological presheaf
on a smooth manifold produces Taylor tower of the best polynomial approximations. The main
motivation for this theory was the study of the spaces of smooth embeddings of one manifold into
another. I will describe briefly this method and at the end will show how it can be described in the
language of operads.

In this talk we review reduced order modelling techniques for efficient computational and
geometrical reduction with a special focus on computational fluid dynamics parametrized problems.
Parameters may be physical or geometrical. The proposed computational reduction of parametrized PDEs
is carried out by stable reduced basis method, certified by rigorous error bounds; geometrical
reduction is performed thanks to efficient shape parametrization to model boundaries and/or
interfaces by means of free-form deformation or radial basis functions. The proposed framework is
suited for the solution of inverse problems, like shape optimization, optimal flow control, data
assimilation, parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification and in general in the solution of
iterative and repetitive problems as well as in the real time context.

Seminario P(n): Problemi differenziali non lineari
We investigate linear stability properties of relative equilibria (which are special SO2- invariant
solutions) in mechanical systems with symmetry. In particular we provide a su cient condition to
detect spectral (hence linear) instability of this kind of orbits. Furthermore, dealing with the
planar three-body problem, it is well known that the linear stability of Lagrangian elliptic
equilateral triangle solutions depends on a mass parameter. We are trying to understand (at least in
the circular case), if and how all of these stability properties are typical features of the
gravitational case or are commonly shared with general alpha-homogeneous potentials. Using the
variational nature of these solutions, we study the relation betweeen the Morse index and their
stability via Maslov-type index theory.
