Seminario di Modellazione & Simulazione
In many biomedical applications the data lie naturally in a non-Euclidean space. Examples include
shapes of landmarks, directional data, diffusion tensors and covariance matrices. The concept of a
mean can be defined in such spaces, and also we can work with minimal geodesics as being analogous
to straight lines. However, it is not immediately clear how we define more general curves in
non-Euclidean spaces, for example in describing the expected shape change in a rat skull as the
animal grows. A family of shape curves is introduced which is useful for modelling the changes in
shape in a series of landmark shapes. The relationship between the pre-shape sphere and the shape
space is used to define a general family of curves based on horizontal geodesics on the pre-shape
sphere. Likelihood-based inference for curves in the non-Euclidean shape space of point sets is
discussed. We illustrate the ideas by carrying out a statistical analysis of various biomedical
applications.

A novel procedure - which we call direct transport - is introduced and its effectiveness discussed
for Procrustes motion analysis and phenotypic trajectory analysis of highly scattered sets of
shapes.

Dynamical Systems working seminars
Dynamical zeta functions of Selberg, Smale and Ruelle are analogous to the Riemann zeta function
with the product over primes replaced by products over closed orbits of Anosov flows. In 1967 Smale
conjectured that these zeta functions should be meromorphic but admitted "that a positive answer
would be a little shocking". Nevertheless the continuation was proved in 2012 by
Giulietti-Liverani-Pollicott. In my talk I will present a proof of this result obtained by Dyatlov
and myself and inspired by a trace formula of Guillemin and by recent work of Faure-Sjostrand. It is
based on a simple idea involving wave front sets and propagation of singularities: we apply methods
of microlocal analysis to the generator of the flow, in particular, propagation of singularities
results due to Duistermaat-Hormander, Melrose and Vasy.
Ore 14:15, Aula B
We discuss a fixed point method to obtain a local central limit theorem for distributions defined by
certain renewal type equations. The main motivation for investigating these equations stems from
applications to lace expansions, in particular to high dimensional weakly self-avoiding walks. As an
application we introduce and treat such self-avoiding walks in continuous space. The error bounds
obtained are sharper that the ones obtained by other methods. Joint work with E. Bolthausen and C.
Ritzmann.

Shape-from-shading is a well-known, although ill-posed, 3D-reconstruction technique. Photometric
stereo is an extension of shape-from-shading, where several light sources are used to illuminate the
scene from different points of view. This problem is well-posed when the light sources are known.
However, when there are unknown ("uncalibrated photometric stereo"), an ambiguity still occurs,
which is called the "generalized bas-relief ambiguity". In my talk, I will detail this ambiguity
and how to remove it.

discussa.

Seminario di Geometria e Algebra
In this talk we consider both nilpotent finitely generated groups and nilpotent Riemannian Lie
groups. In both cases, the asymptotic cones are Carnot groups equipped with some subFinsler
structure. We will review the whole terminology. The subRiemannian Heisenberg group will be a key
example. The main focus of the talk is to examine the rate of convergence of the rescaled spaces
toward their asymptotic cones and some consequences. The main results are in collaboration with E.
Breuillard (Paris).

Seminario P(n): Problemi differenziali non lineari
We provide some explicit examples of nonlocal s-minimal surfaces for 0 < s < 1, namely stationary
for the s-perimeter functional, introduced first in the form of a singular integral, related to
fractional Laplacian, by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre and Savin, which recovers the classical concept in
the limit s -> 1. We find and analyze stability of a class of Lawson cones which shows important
differences with the classical case. In addition we construct an axially symmetric analog of the
catenoid in R3 in the limiting case when s approaches 1.
