We shall discuss the behavior of type II superconductors in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau theory
for an applied magnetic field varying between the second and third critical fields. In this regime
superconductivity is restricted to a thin layer along the boundary of the sample and we will prove
that the Ginzburg-Landau energy is determined to leading order by the minimization of a simplified
1D functional in the direction perpendicular to the boundary. In the special case of disc samples,
we will derive pointwise estimates on the Ginzburg-Landau order parameter, thereby proving a
conjecture due to Xing-Bin Pan.

Seminario di Equazioni Differenziali
We study the boundary behavior of solutions to elliptic integro-differential equations. First we
prove that, for the fractional Laplacian (-Delta)^s with s in (0,1), solutions u are comparable to
d^s, where d(x)=dist(x,partialOmega) is the distance to the boundary of the domain. Moreover, we
show that u/d^s is Hoelder continuous up to the boundary, and that u/d^s|_[partialOmega] plays the
role that the normal derivative plays in second order elliptic equations. Finally, we also present
new boundary regularity results for fully nonlinear integro-differential equations.
Ore 14:45, Aula Dal Passo, Università di Roma II
Seminario di Equazioni Differenziali
We will briefly discuss the motivation of fully nonlinear integro-differential equations from the
perspective of stochastic differential control and games, putting the emphasis in financial
modeling. Next, we will explain the equivalent to an elliptic equation with bounded measurable
coefficients in the nonlocal context, and why the proof of Holder regularity of solutions is much
more elementary when the order of the equation is less that 2. Finally, we will give a new short
proof of the old second order Cordes-Nirenberg estimates in which the regularity for the local
equation is obtained by factorizing it into two nonlocal equations. As in the original result, we
obtain an explicit pinch condition for the eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix. Similar ideas
gives also new Cordes-Nirenberg type results for integro-differential equations.

Corso di Dottorato
The mapping class group of a surface S, denoted by MCG(S), is the group of homeomorphisms of S up to
isotopy (i.e. homotopy through homeomorphisms). This group is a fundamental object in low
dimensional topology. For instance, two of the easiest ways to build 3-manifolds are encoded by
elements of the mapping class group: Heegaard splittings and suspensions of diffeomorphisms. The
study of the mapping class group is very active since the work of Thurston in the 80's. The course
will cover the following topics: finite subgroups of MCG(S), curve complex, generating sets, torsion
free subgroups, Torelli group.

We introduce a library of pure functional terms with the following features: (i) any term can be
typed in a type system which implicitly certifies it belongs to the class of terms which evaluate in
polynomial time; (ii) they implement all the basic functions required to perform arithmetic on
binary finite fields. The type assignment system is Type Functional Assembly (TFA), an extension of
Dual Light Affine Logic (DLAL). The development of the whole library shows we can think of TFA as a
domain specific language in which the composition of variants of standard functional programming
schemes drives a programmer to think of implementations under non standard patterns.
