In this talk I present an abstract framework under which Morse theoretical methods can be applied to some non-compact variational problems by computing the difference of topology induced by "critical points at infinity" in the sense of Bahri. As application we sketch how to apply the abstract theorem to the Nirenberg problem of prescribing the scalar curvature on spheres.
